Why drugs are bad

Monday, May 31, 2010

Here's something you don't see every day: Cage fighter 'ripped out heart of training partner':
A US cage fighter ripped out the heart of his training partner while he was still alive after becoming convinced he was possessed by the devil.

Jarrod Wyatt also cut out his friend's tongue and ripped off most of his face in a brutal assault that police said looked like a scene from a horror film.

They found the 26 year old standing naked over his friend's body with body parts, including an eyeball, strewn around the blood splattered room.

Wyatt told police he had drunk a cup of tea spiked with hallucinogenic mushrooms and became convinced his close friend Taylor Powell was possessed.

15-month-old kid survives after falling in front of train in his stroller

Friday, May 28, 2010

Driver praised after baby survives pram being struck by train:
THE train driver who slammed on the emergency brakes as a baby in a pram tumbled into his path says he was thinking of his granddaughter as the near-tragedy unfolded.

Amazingly, the 15-month-old boy suffered only scratches after being dragged face down along a track for 10m.

The split-second drama happened when his grandmother looked away and the pram rolled off the platform at Tooronga station.
Apparently, stuff like this happens all the time.

Game in secondary school gets five pregnant

Friday, May 28, 2010

Kids do the darndest things:
Five young teenagers got pregnant after playing games with their school mates from a lower secondary school in the town of Ostroda, northern Poland.

Students, aged 14-15, played a game called "the sun" or "a star". "Girls lay on the floor in a circle with their heads together and eyes closed and boys copulate with them, taking turns. The winner was the boy who managed to finish the intercourse last," one of the students revealed.

Donkey found not guilty after 8-year trial

Friday, May 28, 2010

A Croatian donkey has been found not guilty of assault after a trial lasting eight years.

Dino the donkey was accused in 2002 of biting an eight-year-old girl in the northern village of Blazevdol.

The child’s parents attempted to sue Dino’s owner, Ljubomir Smrndic, demanding damages to be paid to the girl until she reached the age of 18.

But Smrndic successfully argued Dino had been provoked by the girl who had thrown stones at the donkey.

Judges this week ruled that Dino was not guilty and that Smrndic should not pay damages.

Sadly, Dino will be unaware of the victory as she died two years ago.

ROFLCon documentary

Wednesday, May 26, 2010

For one weekend every two years, the viral internet comes together IRL (in real life). Yup, it’s as bad as it sounds.

And by bad, we mean really, really awesome. ROFLCon, the brainchild of a few Harvard undergraduates, is a biennial gathering of the Internet’s foremost makers of viral memes, their hardcore fanboys, and the net researchers who get excited about them (with a hefty dose of chin-rubbing, no doubt).
Listen to people like Charlie Smidth (Keyboard Cat), Ben Huh (I Can Has Cheezburger), the guys from Autotune the News, Mahir Cagri (the original Borat), the guys behind Stuff White People Like, David after Dentist, Alexey Vayner (Impossible is Nothing) and more to what they have to say about memes and Internet culture in this 20 mins. documentary about ROFLcon.

Google Pac-Man logo bringing down the economy

Wednesday, May 26, 2010

You may remember the Pac-Man game as the Google logo a couple of days ago. I've played on it too for about 5 mins. However, statistics say:
Eighties video game Pac-Man has eaten up five million hours of work time since Google introduced it onto its homepage last week.

The internet search giant posted the first ever interactive Google doodle on Saturday to mark the 30th birthday of the classic arcade game.

It spent the weekend incorporated into the logo atop the Google online search homepage.

It was so popular Google decided to give it a permanent home at Google.com/pacman.

However, now the software firm RescueTime have warned the little yellow character has gobbled up an estimated 4,819,352 hours of time in the U.S. alone.
If the average Google user has a cost of $25/hr then this has created a tally of $120,483,800 or £84million.

'For that same cost, you could hire all 19,835 google employees, from Larry and Sergey down to their janitors, and get 6 weeks of their time,' Tony Wright from RescueTime said.

Predicting the World Cup results with memes

Wednesday, May 26, 2010

WorldCupCollege calculated the winning chances of the 2010 World Cup participants using memetics, by the countries' internet usage and population density.

The science of memetics asserts that human behaviour and culture are shaped by memes.

A country which facilitates the effective spread of memes might be expected to have a successful national football team. Whilst memes have causal properties and are capable of replicating between human hosts, environmental context can hinder or assist this process. If advanced ideas on fitness, technique, tactics and strategy spread more quickly in one country in comparison with another, then this could confer competitive advantage.
