Spike Lee's next joint, funded by Kickstarter

Tuesday, July 23, 2013

After hearing about the success of Rob Thomas' Veronica Mars, and Zach Braff's Wish I Was Here Kickstarter projects, NYC filmmaker Spike Lee decided to get a little piece of the action too and took to the crowd-funding website in an attempt to raise the $1,250,000 he needs for his new feature film.
With the current climate in The Hollywood Studio System it's not an encouraging look for Independent Filmmakers. I'm not hating, just stating the facts. Super Heroes, Comic Books, 3D Special EFX, Blowing up the Planet Nine Times and Fly through the Air while Transforming is not my Thang. To me it's not just that these Films are being made but it seems like these are the only films getting made. To The Studios it seems like every Film must be a Home run on a Global scale, a Tent Pole Enterprise, able to spin off Sequel after Sequel after Sequel after Sequel after Sequel after Sequel.

I have a different vision of what Cinema can be, a different vision of what some under-served Audiences might want to see. That is why I am here on KICKSTARTER, to raise the Funds for The New Spike Lee Joint, to get this BAD BOY financed. Nothing in Life is Free and if you want something you got to pay for it. If you have liked any of my Films in the past, this is the price it costs to see another one (which can be less than the cost of one Movie Ticket). We feel the different levels on contributions make it affordable for everyone to GET DOWN FOR THE CAUSE.
Not many words about the project though, except: "Human beings who are addicted to blood. Funny, sexy, and bloody (and it's not "Blacula")...

Infographic: Could we really build giant "Pacific Rim"-style robots?

Monday, July 22, 2013

Tech News Daily, with consultation from Cornell University professor of robotics Andy Ruina, analyzes the challenges faced when trying to build a massive robot, like the one in Pacific Rim.
Say, for example, that you wanted to build a robot that is 10 times the height of an average human while maintaining human proportions. You also want to make this robot capable of jumping a height equivalent to the distance between its knees and the ground. The distance between knees and ground is also 10 times bigger for that robot than it is for the human, so you have to move 1,000 times the weight 10 times as far, which equals 10,000 times the energy requirement.

This basic problem holds for nature as well as mechanics, said Ruina. That's why even dinosaurs never grew bigger than species such as amphicoelias, which scientists believe was 40 to 60 meters in length and weighed up to 135 tons. "Certainly there's an advantage for animals being bigger—they can eat, squash, chew—but animals are only so big. When they get bigger they have a harder time dragging around their own weight. It's a little bit counterintuitive—you'd think it'd balance out but it doesn't."

Satanists turn the founder of Westboro Baptist Church's dead mother gay

Friday, July 19, 2013

From Vice:
The Satanic Temple, a burgeoning community of worship devoted to the Dark Lord, has performed a “Pink Mass” over the grave of Westboro Baptist Church founder Fred Phelps Jr.’s mother. The Pink Mass is a Satanic ritual performed after death that turns the deceased's straight spirit into a homo one—it’s not unlike the Mormon practice of baptizing the dead, only much gayer.

On Sunday the Satanic Temple, which first came into the national spotlight last January when the organization announced its support for Florida Governor Rick Scott, went to the Phelps family graveyard in Mississippi to perform the ritual. (Two Pink Masses were performed, one with a female couple and another with men.)

Doctor diagnoses woman with back pain with "Ghetto Booty"

Wednesday, July 17, 2013

From ATL Night Spots:
Terry Ragland's doctor says he was just trying to dumb down her back pain diagnosis when he told her she suffers from "ghetto booty."

"I think I blacked out after he said ghetto booty," the 55-year-old Tennessee woman told News Channel 3, recalling her shock at hearing those words come out of Dr. Timothy Sweo's mouth.

Ragland's condition is known as "lumbar lordosis" — a curve of the spine that causes a protrusion of the buttocks coupled with significant discomfort.

I was trying to take a technical conversation regarding your lower back and make it less technical,” Dr. Sweo told Ragland in a letter meant to be apologetic.

"It says to me that he doubts what type of intellect I have, how intelligent I am to be able to understand what he conveys to me in a medical term," Ragland told the Memphis-based CBS affiliate.

Reached by phone, Sweo told the news station he doesn't understand what was wrong with telling his patient she has a "ghetto booty."

"I think I do understand why her feelings were hurt but I don't understand what's offensive about it."
