So 'Jersey Shore' is getting cancelled

Friday, August 31, 2012

MTV finally pulls the pug on Jersey Shore:
The sixth and final edition of the show recently wrapped production and will debut Thursday, Oct. 4, with the crew back in Seaside Heights for one last party. The network is also airing a retrospective Jersey Shore special titled “Gym, Tan, Look Back” that will include a first look at the final season. The special will air before the Video Music Awards on Thursday, Sept. 6. The Shore cast will make a live appearance on the red carpet during the VMAs pre-show, as well.

The sixth season is not expected to actively portray that the series is coming to close. Before filming began, the cast was informed this might be the show’s final season, but they were not officially told the news until this morning. The show is survived by its two spin-offs, The Pauly D Project and Snooki & JWOWW. Though MTV has not yet announced a verdict on Pauly D Project, the Snooki series was picked up for a second season.

Hipster-targeted billboard ad

Friday, August 31, 2012

An ad for Urban Eatery, seen in Uptown, Minneapolis:

Hipster Doofuses

The text:
ATTENTION HIPSTER DOOFUSES: Sorry about that, but it’s not easy getting the attention of people who reject mainstream consumerism like billionaires reject tax overhaul. Here’s the thing: Do you ever wake up in your designer platform bed in your urban loft, shuffle over to your espresso machine and wonder: Is this all there is? Day after day of wearing ironic vintage tee shirts and searching the Internet for nu rave techno rap bands from Uzbekistan? Don’t you wish you could let your androgynously cut hair down, wear some not-quite-so-painfully-skinny jeans and kick back and watch the (legal in all 50 states version of) grass grow? Not to get all marketingy, but at Urban Eatery you can take a break from looking vaguely disinterested in everything while wearing your favorite organic fedora. We use fresh ingredients from local farms and offer free valet parking—and free is nice if you have one of those hipster liberal arts degrees. So why not take some time out of your busy schedule of wrestling with existential angst and drop by Urban Eatery. After a hard week of conforming to nonconformity, you’ve earned it.

Missing woman unknowingly joins search for herself

Friday, August 31, 2012

Meanwhile in Iceland: a woman from an group of tourists joins the search for herself.

From Yahoo News:
According to the Reykjavik Grapevine, a woman described as "Asian, about 160cm, in dark clothing and speaks English well" was listed as missing Saturday near the Eldgjá volcanic canyon in southern Iceland.

A search continued through the weekend with reports saying she got off a tour bus and never returned.

It turns out the woman merely changed clothes during the bus stop, and after she returned, those on the bus didn't recognize her.

When the description of the "missing" woman was circulated, apparently the lady who changed her outfit didn't recognize the description of herself. So she joined the search party.

About 50 people searched the area in vehicles and on foot, and a helicopter was ready to assist.

Eventually it occurred to the "missing" woman that she could very well be the person everyone was looking for, and she promptly reported herself as safe and sound to police.
Apparently, not even Asians can tell themselves apart from each other.

The Miami zombie victim speaks

Friday, August 10, 2012

Ronald Poppo, the man who got his face chewed off by an attacker on drugs on MacArthur Causeway, in Miami, two months ago, spoke for the first time about the incident.
"He attacked me," Poppo said of Rudy Eugene. "He just ripped me to ribbons. He chewed up my face. He plucked out my eyes. Basically that's all there is to say about it."

"For a very short amount of time I thought he was a good guy," Poppo said. "But he just went and turned berserk. He apparently didn't have a good day at the Beach and he – he was coming back. And I guess he took it out, took it out on me or something. I don’t know."

[...]

Sgt. Williams asked Poppo what Eugene was saying when he attacked him.

"'You, me, buddy, and nobody else here,'" Poppo recalled. "'I'm gonna — gonna kill you.' Or something like that, I guess."

"Did he say why?" Williams inquired.

"No, he just started to scream," Poppo explained. "And was talking kind of funny talk for a while too."

"What do you mean by funny talk?" Williams asked.

"That I was gonna die. And he was gonna die," Poppo said. "He must have been souped up on something."

This is how sperm whales sleep

Friday, August 10, 2012

Researchers came across this pod of sleeping sperm whales, a species known to be one of the least sleep-dependent mammals known.
A team led by Luke Rendell at the University of St Andrew's, UK, were monitoring calls and behaviour in sperm whales (Physeter macrocephalus) off the northern Chile coast when they accidentally drifted into the middle of a pod of whales hanging vertically in the water, their noses poking out of the surface. At least two of the whales were facing the boat, but not a single animal responded.

"It was actually pretty scary. The boat had drifted into the group with its engine off [while] I was below decks making acoustic recordings," says Rendell. "Once I saw the situation I decided the best thing to do was to try and sail our way out of the group rather than turn the engine on and have them all react."

Written on the wing of an airplane

Thursday, August 9, 2012

A passenger on an Alaska Airlines flight to Seattle was seated next to a window with a view of the plane's wing and saw this:

We know about this

Needless to say, the man suddenly felt safer.
The incident on July 28 drew comments on Twitter and other social media websites, but the Seattle-based airline says there was nothing to worry about.

Spokeswoman Bobbie Egan said today that it was an approved trim repair to the corner flap on the right wing. A maintenance technician wrote to let the flight crew know.

Egan said: "The message was the result of someone's good intentions," but the wing note "was not appropriate and did not follow company procedures".

Plane crash filmed from inside cockpit

Thursday, August 9, 2012

Footage from two different cameras from passengers inside a small airplane show it going down in the woods, not long after take-off.

(sNSFW, pilot's banged up face)

The uploader of the video says:
Miraculously, everyone survived. The pilot will make a full recovery and the rest of us escaped with superficial injuries and feel very lucky to be alive . This trip was much anticipated and due to our excitement we had our Gopro cameras filming at various times. After flying up into the mountains for a morning hike in the Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness we were planning on flying to a small mountain town for dinner. Due to warming temperatures there was an increase in density altitude and we had a hard time getting adequate lift. After taking off we hit an air pocket that made us rapidly loose altitude, pushing us down into the trees. The cameras were left on for a couple of hours during the aftermath.

First official image of Daniel Day-Lewis as Abraham Lincoln

Wednesday, August 8, 2012

We've had a sneak peek at actor Daniel Day-Lewis in Abe Lincoln make-up for Steven Spielberg's Lincoln before.

Spielberg talked to Entertainment Weekly about the actor's technique and him getting into character, which is something typical for Day-Lewis.
Daniel was always conscious of his contemporary surroundings. Daniel never went into a fugue state. He did not channel Lincoln. All that stuff is just more about gossip than it is about technique.

I was calling [all] the actors by their character names. That was something I felt was important to establish a little authenticity, maybe even more for me than for them.
