African men vs. Hollywood stereotypes

Thursday, April 26, 2012

In this video brought to you by Mama Hope and directed by Joe Sabia, four Kenyan men - Benard, Brian, Derrick, Gabriel - are letting you know that the typical African man is nothing like the ones portrayed on movies and TV.
They said, "If people believed only what they saw in movies, they would think we are all warlords who love violence." They, like Mama Hope, are tired of the over-sensationalized, one-dimensional depictions of African men and the white savior messaging that permeates our media. They wanted to tell their own stories instead, so we handed them the mic and they made this video.

Rubber chicken in space

At the beginning of March, the sun unleashed the most intense radiation storm since 2003. And that's when students at the Bishop Union High School in California have thought to themselves "what better way to study the solar radiation than sending a rubber chicken to space?"

The fowl named Cammilla, the mascot of NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory, was equiped with sensors to measure the radiation and sent to 120,000 ft, where she was exposed to high-energy solar protons at point blank range.

The perfect voices

Saturday, April 21, 2012

Alan RickmanDame Judy Dench

The perfect celebrity voices were mathematically determined by scientists:
Researchers in the U.K. have mathematically determined that the perfect voice for men lies somewhere between those of British actors Jeremy Irons and Alan Rickman. (Professor Snape in the "Harry Potter" movies did always have a way with words.) For women, it's somewhere near the voice of James Bond's M, 77-year-old thespian Dame Judi Dench.

A linguist and a sound engineer reportedly worked out their formula based on a combination of tone, speed, frequency, words per minute, and intonation. According to the researchers, the ideal voice should vocalize no more than 164 words per minute and pause for 0.48 seconds between sentences, which should fall rather than rise. (Apparently raising your voice is associated with weakness!)
