NYC layer-lapse

Monday, November 27, 2017

After doing Boston Layer-Lapse about three years ago, video artist Julian Tryba of Alinia Media uses the same complex time-lapse techniques on some panorama images of New York City, in a video in which he assigns different regions and objects in each sequence to separate points in time.
Traditional time-lapses are constrained by the idea that there is a single universal clock. In the spirit of Einstein's relativity theory, layer-lapses assign distinct clocks to any number of objects or regions in a scene. Each of these clocks may start at any point in time, and tick at any rate. The result is a visual time dilation effect known as layer-lapse.

GoPro camera gets covered by lava, survives

Monday, November 13, 2017

About 16 months ago, Honolulu tour guide Erik Storm of Kilauea EcoGuides, places his GoPro camera into a crack to film the lava flows.
“I was telling a story when the molten lava completely engulfed my GoPro (with housing on) and it caught on fire,” Storm tells PetaPixel. “I used a geology rock hammer to pull it out of the lava and thought it was a total loss.

After getting back home, Storm hammered the cooled rock off the GoPro housing. He suddenly noticed that the Wi-Fi light on the camera within was still blinking.

When he pulled the SD card out of the camera, he found that the footage was still intact. The last video on it shows the camera getting engulfed by lava and flames bursting into view.

“The camera even still worked although not a well as it did before,” Storm says. “Truly amazing it survived!”

Acclaimed artist Andrew DeGraff has created beautiful hand-painted maps of all your favorite films, from King Kong and North by Northwest to The Princess Bride, Fargo, Pulp Fiction, even The Breakfast Club—with the routes of major characters charted in meticulous cartographic detail. Follow Marty McFly through the Hill Valley of 1985, 1955, and 1985 once again as he races Back to the Future. Trail Jack Torrance as he navigates the corridors of the Overlook Hotel in The Shining. And join Indiana Jones on a globe-spanning journey from Nepal to Cairo to London on his quest for the famed Lost Ark. Each map is presented in an 11-by-14-inch format, with key details enlarged for closer inspection, and is accompanied by illuminating essays from film critic A. D. Jameson, who speaks to the unique geographies of each film.
