Coyote incredibly survives getting hit by car

Tuesday, September 12, 2017

Georgie Knox shares a couple of photos of a run-in she had with a coyote while driving to work one morning.

She writes:
Last week on my way to work in the early morning, a coyote darted in front of my car and I hit it. I heard a crunch and believed I ran over and killed it. Upon stopping at a traffic light by my work, a construction woman notified me that there was in fact a coyote still embedded in my car. When I got out to look, this poor little guy was looking up and blinking at me. I notified Alberta fish and wildlife enforcement right away who came to rescue him. Miraculously, he was freed and had minimal injuries despite having hitched a ride from Airdrie to Calgary at highway speeds! Their biologist checked him over and gave him the good to go. They released him in Kananaskis. Clearly mother nature has other plans for this special little guy!

Hurricane size comparison

Monday, September 11, 2017

The guys from Reigarw Comparisons have created a video that compares the sizes of hurricane in recent years.
We compare the sizes and power of hurricanes, tornadoes, typhoons & cyclones, from a tropical storm to a category 5 hurricane such as Hurricane Irma, Hurricane Andrew & Hurricane Katrina, and even go beyond what you'd expect!

Please take note: The size indicated here is the maximum diameter based on Meteorologist calculations (Sourced from National Hurricane Center, National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration & NASA, or own mapping estimates based on images if no official figures are given. It is not entirely accurate, but it gives a good scale of the sizes of certain tropical storms.

Ps: The hurricanes are supposed to rotate counter clockwise instead of clockwise while cyclones are rotated in the correct direction. It is our hindsight.

Water bugs react to voice

Friday, September 8, 2017

YouTuber Amy Lippus's dad and his friend "Icky" were camping on the shore of Nellie Lake, in California, when they noticed that the insects on the surface of the lake reacted to the sound of his voice.
The insect reacting to the shout is the Water Boatman (Corixidae). The lake has very few, if any, fish in it, so a huge population of water bugs, mostly Corixidae (from what we could see). For whatever reason, the ones that happen to be on the surface when we shout shoot forward rapidly when they hear a loud voice. The ones that are underwater don't react at all. They don't react to a clap. The only thing that got a reaction out of them was shouting. They seemed to prefer "Hey!" You could actually "see" the speed of sound by watching their reaction propagate across the lake.
