"Space Weird Thing," a sweeded parody of "Space Oddity"

Thursday, May 28, 2015

Inspired by Flight of the Conchords's Bowie's in Space, Michel Gondry's Be Kind Rewind and xkcd's Up Goer Five, the guys from Alaska Robotics have created a sweded version of David Bowie's Space Oddity video, with the lyrics of the song rewritten, using only the 1000 most common words in the English dictionary.

Ground control to top space man
Ground control to top space man
Take your small food rocks and put your head-safe on

Ground control to top space man
(ten, ten less one, ten less two, seven,
Start the numbers-down, big fires on
six, five, four, three, two, one, up-go!)
Check the start thing and may God’s love be with you…

For those of you wondering, I was in the (wind) shadow of the fantastic hotel at Budir Iceland, I had already lost my pair of eyeglasses in a prior venture into the wind, then decided to make this scene inspired by a video I saw made at the top of Mount Washington decades ago where a couple was served breakfast out on the patio of the observation deck in a holwing 100+ MPH wind. I estimate the wind this day was about 75-80 MPH.

Fin-shaped swimming aid for kids

Tuesday, May 26, 2015

Teach your kid to swim with the help of SwimFin, a swimming aid in the shape of a shark's fin.
SwimFin is the first truly new development in swimming aids for decades. Worn on the back, it does not hamper or restrict the ability to move in the water.

SwimFin is a flotation device that provides as much buoyancy as the swimmer needs while helping maintain a good position in the water. Other instruction aids tend to tip the swimmer forward or hold them upright, resulting in a swimming position that impedes movement through the water, and actually makes swimming more difficult. SwimFin on the other hand gives only the support needed, giving the user the FEEL of independence, and thus encouragement and motivation. With SwimFin, the lower you are in the water the more support it will give you, as with the beginner swimmer. The higher you are in the water the less support it will give you as with an improved swimmer. SwimFin compensates for different abilities.

Each SwimFin is available in a range of colours and includes TWO standard straps.

An animated history of weapons

Monday, May 25, 2015

Mostly based on the book A History of the World in 100 Weapons by Chris McNab, The Atlantic has created this animation that takes us through the evolution of weaponry.
From the axe, which originated in 1,000,000 B.C., to today's killer drones, mankind's use of weapons has been varied and incredibly inventive. Weapons have changed history and aided in the rise and fall of civilizations. For example, gunpowder, a Chinese invention, led to the development of cannons and guns—revolutionizing warfare in the Middle Ages and beyond.
