Friday, December 21, 2012

Back to the Future Hoverboard from Mattel
Movie-accurate down to the smallest detail and fully sanctioned by Universal Studios, this is a 1:1 scale model (measures approximately 28" x 8" x 3"). Our Hoverboard includes authentic "whooshing" sounds sampled directly from the films and a deco featuring Mattel logos just like in the films. And although full hovering technology isn't expected until 2015, be assured your Hoverboard will gently glide over most level surfaces (it will not, however, work on water).

How snowflakes are formed

Thursday, December 20, 2012

In their video The Chemistry of Snowflakes, American Chemical Society's Bitesize Science, explain how snowflakes come to be and why they have their particular shapes the do.
The video tracks formation of snowflakes from their origins in bits of dust in clouds that become droplets of water falling to Earth. When the droplets cool, six crystal faces form because water molecules bond in hexagonal networks when they freeze. It explains that ice crystals grow fastest at the corners between the faces, fostering development of the six branches that exist in most snowflakes. As snowflakes continue to develop, the branches can spread, grow long and pointy, or branch off into new arms. As each snowflake rises and falls through warmer and cooler air, it thus develops its own distinctive shape.

Eagle snatches kid, almost takes him away

Wednesday, December 19, 2012

A man was out using his camera in Mount Royal Park, in Montreal, Canada, filming a Golden eagle in mid-air, when the bird, spotting a toddler on the ground, dives in, grabs it with its claws and tries to take it away.

Luckily, in Canada, it's pretty cold this time of the year and the kid was wearing a thick jacket, otherwise this video would have had a totally different ending.

Prison escape of the day

Wednesday, December 19, 2012

From NY Daily News: Two bank robbers escape Chicago jail by scaling 15 stories down a rope reportedly made of bedsheets:
Two bank robbers are still on the loose after using a makeshift rope to drop 15 stories out of the window of a federal jail in Chicago.

Some time before 5 a.m. on Tuesday, staff at the Metropolitan Correctional Center in downtown Chicago realized that cellmates Joseph "Jose" Banks, 37, and Kenneth Conley, 38, were missing. After searching the premises, authorities noticed that a long knotted rope, reportedly made out of bed sheets, was dangling from their window.

The windows in the building are quite small, and some don't open at all, Frank Bochte, spokesperson for the FBI's Chicago division, told the Daily News. Chicago police are still investigating how exactly the cellmates managed to escape.

The building is in the heart of Chicago’s downtown area, a few blocks from a federal court. Still, the men managed to escape without attracting any witnesses.

A letter from a friendly neighbor

Tuesday, December 18, 2012

From Deadspin:
A night out in Wilmington, N.C., can do this to you. Frank was out at a bar, got very, very drunk, and as he tends to do, donned his superhero disguise. ("He likes to take his shirt off at bars when he gets hammered," says a friend who sent along a shirtless pic, but asked that we not run it.) He took a taxi home, wearing his shirt-cape the entire way, but accidentally entered the wrong townhouse. Once there, he ran around in circles pretending to fly.

While flight is not among SuperFrank's powers, passing out and peeing on the couch apparently is. In the morning, after staggering back to his house, Frank received this friendly note under his door.

Street art vandalism of the day

Friday, December 14, 2012

A street artist from Whitstable, Kent, UK, that calls himself Catman paints over some local art.
The Christmas cartoon has been welcomed by local councillors, who are usually harsh critics of all graffiti.

Cllr John Wratten said: "The original has been there for a long time so I guess it needed updating and it has been done tastefully, with typical Whitstable good humour.

The colourful depiction of St Nick appeared next to the original graffiti last weekend, when it is believed the artist painted it overnight.

Other pictures believed to have been the work of Catman have appeared across the town, including pictures of Marilyn Monroe on traffic bollards.
