Don't worry, he's is ok. Man's sight saved after shears impale eye:
University Medical Center trauma surgeons saved the eyesight and life of an 86-year-old Green Valley man who fell on pruning shears that pierced his eye socket and neck, said Ann Cisneros, a UMC spokeswoman, Monday.

Leroy Luetscher was taken to UMC after losing his balance when he dropped the gardening tool while working in his yard July 30. The pruning shears landed point-down, but Leutscher fell on the handle, Cisneros said.

The tool pierced his eye socket and landed in his neck, where the handle of the shears lodged on his carotid artery, said Dr. Lynn Polonski, an eye specialist with UMC’s trauma team.

IPad cases made of Bernie Madoff's pants

Thursday, August 11, 2011

From the NY Post:
Tech entrepreneur John Vaccaro bought up much of Madoff's wardrobe at auction and had the clothing cut up and refashioned into $500 app-arel.

The first five iPad cases, made from a navy blue Christian Dior sweater and a Bergdorf Goodman cardigan, "sold almost instantly, just by word of mouth," Vaccaro told The Post.

"A Wall Street lawyer wanted to give them as Christmas presents," he said.

Vaccaro's company, Frederick James, had already been making iPad covers out of cashmere, but when he heard about the Madoff auction last fall, the idea clicked.

Meme alert: #Greenfieldism

Wednesday, August 10, 2011

British neuroscientist Baroness Susan Greenfield is known for her predictions about how the Internet is going to destroy society, that it "will rewire your brain" and "turn us into social cripples". In a recent interview for The Guardian, she said: "I point to the increase in autism and I point to internet use. That's all."

After reading this, science writer Carl Zimmer, feeling his brain was rewiring into a seizure, took to Twitter: "I point to the increase in esophageal cancer and I point to The Brady Bunch. That's all. #greenfieldism"
