Hero of the day: man saves the lives of over 2 million babies

Tuesday, March 23, 2010

'Man with the golden arm' saves 2million babies in half a century of donating rare type of blood:
James Harrison, 74, has an antibody in his plasma that stops babies dying from Rhesus disease, a form of severe anaemia.

It was found his plasma could treat the condition and since then it has been given to hundreds of thousands of women.

Mr Harrison has been giving blood every few weeks since he was 18 years old and has now racked up a total of 984 donations.

It is estimated he has helped save 2.2 million babies so far.

He said: 'I've never thought about stopping. Never.' He made a pledge to be a donor aged 14 after undergoing major chest surgery in which he needed 13 litres of blood.

I wish that people could get over the need for attention... If you are so lowly that you can't read this guy's story and appreciate what he has done or the reasons for which he has done it, you are like many others have said: WEAK.

Let this man's good will go without being tainted. He has done no such act to deserve any type of ill comments. Just think of the fact that there are people out there living and enjoying all that we are blessed to enjoy, when they may have never had the chance to do so.

To this amazing man, I send my prayers and hope that with an exception to the distasteful comments, he makes an impression on the lives of someone or many. If you believe in there being a reason for everything, this man has a good one and a good heart.

Please save us from having to read anymore hateful comments and realize that even if you don't appreciate his actions, the living children appreciate the fact that they are just that: LIVING.

I am proud that a man like this exists.

I actually can't believe some of you exist. Blaming this man for overpopulating the world. How about you do us a favour and not have kids, heck you can do your bit too! Hats off to this superhero. Saving the lives of THAT many people, heck were considered heroes for saving the life of one person...

To anyone worried about overpopulation: focus your good intentions on the family planning, not on the humans that are already born. Babies are home free, unless you're willing to take YOURSELF out of the population figures. Then we can talk reducing numbers. Until then, it's PREVENTING numbers.

Rhesus disease has nothing to do with genetic inferiority. It is simply a rare complication that happens when a difference in the blood type of the fetus causes the mother's immune system to produce antibodies against it. It is merely a fluke in human development and treating RH disease does not perpetuate any genetic disorder. In fact, the RH factor may have a potential in increasing resistance against certain bloodborne pathogens.

Of course, for you "horde the grain" types, I guess that means more people for everyone! yay!

Anonymous said...

Wow. If it's possible for him to save lives why would you ever denote it.. some people are ridiclous.. jealous much? If your point to argue is that "it was nature for them to die" well one what the eff, and two then it was natur for this man to be born with what he has to save those babies... amazing:)

To eveyone bitching about natural selection, shut the hell up. Honestly. This article had nothing to do with that and you're blowing off this mans amazing contribution to society with your idiotic comments. Stop trying to show each other up to see who can type the longest most pointless paragraphs about how we should kill people off because of nonsense and just take the article for what it is.

Anonymous said...

That's great stuff! Well done man!

It's nothing to do with God though, you under-educated fools! It's genetics. You know, it's that stuff Darwin talked about which is scientifically proven; in the same way that one plus one equals two...

I pity the fool who still believes in God. You praise God for creating his blood type but ignore the fact that your assumptions means God must have created birth defects as well.

Good job overpopulating the world, letting the weak survive is not good for our species. I don't apologize if some of you morons think I'm being harsh and/or cruel.

I agree. The human race has totally destroyed natural selection. Screwing with nature is never good. I realize that if our society still used natural selecion, I would be dead, but that's okay with me because my death would have been benificial to society because my weakness wouldn't have been dragging them down.

Anonymous said...

This is all nonsense. Everyone on this page makes me laugh. Look at all of you with your logical fallacies spewing your jumble. I can do that too, but I wont, because none of this really matters. It's all irrelevant. Yeah, this man is a hero. Yeah, the world has it's problems, but does it really matter? But please, argue on. It's amusing :)

It's not that they don't let you donate blood just because you're gay.
They don't let you donate blood if you've had an*l s*x with another guy.
Get it straight.
They are only discriminating based on your ACTIONS. They also will not accept those who have traveled recently to Africa or even England.

Why is it that so many people, when they hear that lives have been saved or someone has been brought into this world, instead of feeling joy or relief, they feel anger and bitterness? Millions of babies were spared having to suffer disease or death, and millions of parents were spared heart-break, and all you can think is "there are too many people in the world already, they should have died".
Who are you people? I used to think it was just Nazis, but there are too many of you for it to be just Nazis who think like this. It's heartless.

You dude are awesome!!

I don't get how being gay is stopping you from donating blood. If you really want to do it, then don't tell them your gay... It's not that complicated.

To "gay gay gay" guy..i completely agree with you. Lets praise someone who saves fat America and adds to the corrupt population even more. Babies may be cute when they're babies but unfortunately most of them grow up to be the horrible people that make up most of society today. Yes maybe this man saved me as a baby..but if i would have died when i was a baby it really wouldn't have made a difference to me at all honestly. I would be dead and that would be that. At least the babies didn't have to grow up in this culture we're in today. Nice gesture but save something else. Like a dog from the shelter or something. I'd praise you more for that.

The people who think that survival of the fittest is violated by helping the needy are just idiots. First of all the whole concept applies to a species and not to some jerk calling himself the fittest. Also we are genetically programmed to help our own species, so it is these people who are against it that have a genetic problem.

If you don't help in the improvement of your species, you are basically killing it. So all of you with the problem of thinking that you are more fit than any other person in this world, just kill yourself. The rest of the population will be able to help each other and keep the species growing.

Anonymous said...

I agree in part with the poster who reminds us of the issue of overpopulation. The atrocities that are occurring all over the world because we are stretching every resource are very real and the effects are very frightening. If something doesn't happen it will come back upon us.

But there are some basic flaws with your logic. First, medicine being unnatural. The intelligence to overcome issues like this is what has made us as a species so successful. Second, the children being weak. They may have died otherwise, but it would be to no genetic advantage to let them. Negative mothers and negative babies are going to be fine. Positive mothers and babies are going to be fine. Therefore, it is likely that our species will always have both of these types of blood, and there's no inherent disadvantage to either.

Lastly, whether you like it or not, that's not how society works. We don't cast aside the weak. Compassion and cooperation are strong traits that are also a part of our legacy as a species. All we can do for overpopulation is to work towards lowering the birth rates. Like in the very real impoverished countries where women are weak with malnourishment and not protected. It has been shown positively that the education of women in places of high birth rates, like India, has an enormous effect on population. Areas where these efforts to educate girls took place more than halved their birth rates. Women, it seems, when not on the street are both less likely to be raped and possibly less likely to want so many children. Possible reasons for wanting many children, would be to produce sons in the hope that they will some day be able to look after the women.

Now unfortunately I would love to say this man is great but he is also single handedly contributed to mass over population.
Assuming that at 300 million people in the united states of america, and the planet only being able to sustain 1 of 6 people in the current population. 300 million/6 = 50 million people can live, and 250 million = total overpopulation. of those 250 million he has contributed to 1% of the total overpopulation of the country.
he is great

This page is better titled as 'Lie of the day'.
Every sentence in this story is an error or an outright lie.
The guy has no special antibody, what is implied is that he is Rh negative and therefore his blood is useful for treating anemias of Rhesus origin.
It is impossible for a single individual to give nearly 1000 blood donations. At the shortest blood is taken only after a minimum of 3 months.
And they don't take blood off older people; the limit is usually 55-60.

I don't know why this article was written but the author is one BIG ASSHOLE.

Anonymous said...

Actually, you can donate blood every 56 days (from american red cross website) which means that he could donate 6.4 times a year, and if he started donating at age 18 he would have to be about 172 right now if he has given 984 donations. So yeah numbers don't quite add up. Maybe the story is true but the data is wrong, no idea, but someone has to look into that.
Even if it was true, though, I don't know about all those heartless people out there. I have a question for you? If you had a baby be born with a sickness or some type of disease, would you want to save it or would you rather it die since the world is so overpopulated? I don't know about you but I would want my child to live.

I agree with the idea of educating women, the overpopulation occurs mainly in areas where women are less educated and more abused. Areas like Europe actually have less than 2 kids born per couple, which means their population is actually declining. America I think has 2.1 or something in that area. These is due to the women in these continents being educated and wanting to work, so they don't have many children.

And to all the other people cryin a fuckin river over people not saying this guy is jesus because he helped a handful of babies, boo hoo. To those of you going on about weak vs. strong, What exactly are you basing your theory on? Sure they might have been considered weaker when it was all about tracking your prey through the wilderness to feed your family. Guess what. We don't live in those times anymore. Stephen Hawkings has more "strength" Than probably any of us in this thread in this day and age. Its about time you join the rest of us in the 20th century.

I don't think I'll ever get tired of the internet. Weak/Strong :P We're all gettin' fat and lazy anyways, so I don't think we're gonna be churning out any superhumans. Videogames, couches, trolling, and whining do not an ubermensch make (Nor do I understand why you'd want one).

We do have too many people with a weird sense of species entitlement in that we feel the world belongs to us. Our lives have no special value that makes it more worthwhile than that of a fish or dog.

The world does not need millions more people. But no one/no thing deserves to suffer, so now that they're here and healthy they might as well get to live out their lives and have a good time and die when they're good, old and ready.

Thanks for the heads up and information about this,This is the unique post. Well explained . Thanks for sharing..

Anonymous said...

FYI people who think this is a genetic disease (and are showing incredible ignorance/stupidity - do some research for god sake), it's not. It's a result of ABO mismatch between baby and mother on a second pregnancy and antibodies cross the placenta, resulting in a temporary allo-immune situation. If the baby survives 1-2 months after the baby is born then the 'disease' is done and the baby is fine.
So even your ill-contrived argument for genetic weakness is absolutely wrong, let alone the premise behind your argument.
