Infographic: 99 songs for 100 summers

Friday, May 30, 2014

Designer, artist and filmmaker Phillip Niemeyer has created an interactive infographic that features the most iconic summer songs by year, for the last one hundred years.
Travel through the last 100 years to discover which summer songs were either released or peaked in popularity during the summer of their respective years. Some are about the summer or the stuff of summer: parties, picnics, fleeting love, nostalgia or fun. Some have that summer feeling in sound alone. Many are relevant to their times. Some have become standards. Some annoy, like a sticky day with too many mosquitoes. Others slow down time, like an unexpected breeze one hopes will never stop.

This is how you promote a plant sale

Friday, May 30, 2014

To promote their upcoming plant sale, the creative guys from Peaceful Belly Farm from Boisie have created a parody video of Blackstreet's No Diggity that catches everyone's attention.
Josie Erskine, who owns the Peaceful Belly farm with her husband, Clay, told the Daily News the whole concept happened organically as the Blackstreet song played while the employees were working at the farm.

When the music started playing, the staff started to each come up with fun ideas like putting sunglasses on tomatoes, she said.

The video came together very quickly as the staff wrote the song in a minutes and they recorded it in a couple of hours, she said.

The group made a storyboard to set a structure for the video but everyone freelanced when they appeared on video -- starting with Erskine, who arrives at the farm, walks into the greenhouse and puts on her headphones.

Book of the day: "Understand Rap"

Wednesday, May 28, 2014

Understand Rap: Explanations of Confusing Rap Lyrics that You & Your Grandma Can Understand, by William Buckholz
Although rap music is famous for its ingenuity, double entendres and clever turns of phrase, until now no one has attempted to collect rap lyrics into an organised compendium. Enter UNDERSTAND RAP, a very funny pop-cultural reference book based on the website of the same name, which precisely explains all the confusing terms and lyrics used in rap songs in a language even the most un-hip person can understand. The result is a book with breakout potential that's both entertaining and highly informative. The juxtaposition of dry, academic manner with Hip Hop terminology in UNDERSTAND RAP frequently lends itself to ironic comedy gold. For example: Lyric: "been servin' since you was doin' the runnin' man" Explanation: My experience selling drugs began long ago, while you were still concerning yourself with immature things like doing goofy dances where you look like you're running in place. (From Song: Rubberband Man on Album: Trap Muzik by Artist: T.I.) Understand Rap features hip hop artists of all names, colours, and creeds and organise their lyrics into the following categories: Cars, Money, Drugs/Alcohol, People, Places, Fashion, Crime/Weapons, Insults, Skills/Pride and Sex/Relationships.

Michael Jackson hologram performance at the 2014 Billboard Music Awards

Tuesday, May 20, 2014

Michael Jackson was at the 2014 Billboard Music Awards, where he performed Slave to the Rhythm, a song from his posthumous compilation album Xscape that was released on May 9th, as a hologram that took 6 months to set up.
Jackson, in hologram form, performed "Slave to the Rhythm" midway through Sunday night's show with a five-piece band and 16 dancers live onstage. Jackson appeared in gold jacket, white T-shirt and brick red trousers on a set modeled on the art work for the album "Dangerous," an appropriate choice as the track was recorded in 1991 with L.A. Reid and Babyface during the sessions for that album. Released this week on "XSCAPE," which is neck-and-neck with the new Black Keys album for No. 1 on the Billboard 200 next week, the track was produced by Timbaland.

BBMA producers Dick Clark Productions built a special stage at the rear of the MGM Grand Arena that was used only for the Jackson performance. Dancers moved through aisles as Jackson was seen rising from a throne, walking down steps before going into several trademark routines, a moonwalk being one of the them. Lasers, streams of flames and dancers in ancient costumes were part of the film.

The vacant Pontiac Silverdome

Monday, May 19, 2014

Detroiturbex - a website dedicated to documenting the past, present and future of the City of Detroit - has created this video that shows the degradation of the Pontiac Silverdome, the former home of the Detroit Lions, a stadium that from its opening in 1975 up to 1997, was the largest in the NFL.

From Wikipedia:
After the stadium's NFL team, the Detroit Lions, moved to Ford Field in 2001, the stadium was left without a permanent tenant. After multiple attempts to solicit redevelopment plans, the city sold the stadium at auction in 2009. A roof collapse and heavy winter-storm damage has made refurbishment impractical; as of May 2014, the stadium's contents are being salvaged and auctioned and future development is uncertain.

It happened on Tuesday in Bakersfield, CA: 4-year-old Jeremy is playing on the driveway with his bicycle, when the neighbor's dog, an 8-month-old labrador/chow mix, sneaks up behind him and bites his leg. Fortunately, the family cat, Tara, rushed to the rescue, attacking the dog and chasing it away.
Erica Triantafilo, Jeremy's mother, was nearby watering a tree when she heard his screams.

"I didn't really even realize what had happened until after when my husband showed me the surveillance video," Erika said.

Erica told 23ABC the boy needed a few stitches, but he is doing fine. Erica said it could have been much worse.

"I've never seen a cat do that," said Roger Triantafilo, Jeremy's father. "Especially ours. It just shows how much she really has a family-oriented mind set."

Researcher and writer Craig McClain takes a look at the increasing size of the monster Godzilla, from its first appearance till the present day, explaining the phenomenon with Cope's rule.
In 1954 Godzilla was a mere 50 meters (164 ft). In the newest movie, Godzilla is estimated to be 150 meters (492 ft). For comparison the Empire State Building in New York City stands at 381 meters (1250 ft). Incarnations of Godzilla went from 13% of the height of the Empire State Building to nearly 40% of the height in just 60 years. It took cetaceans 55 million years to go from 2.5 meters (8.2 ft) to 30 meters (98 ft) in length.

"Game of Thrones" Guess Who?

Tuesday, May 13, 2014

Vulture offers a Game of Thrones version of the Guess Who? guessing game.
Here is Vulture's "Game of Thrones Guess Who?" Instead of David ("Does your person have a beard?") and Maria ("Does your person have a hat?"), you're going to have to ask about Daenerys ("Is your person bossed up?") and Jaime ("Is your person missing a limb?") Don't get discouraged by the similarities: Yes, a lot of our Game of Thrones heroes have scars and carry swords, so you'll have to be more specific. It's quite a simple game: Phrase your questions with "Does your person ..." and then add on an identifier at the end.

Just print and play:

Mapping the vocabulary of rappers

Tuesday, May 6, 2014

NYC designer and programmer Matt Daniels has created an interactive map that charts 85 of the biggest names in hip hop, by the vocabulary used in their works. He used the first 35,000 words from the lyrics of each artist (which cover about 3-5 studio albums and EP's), based on data provided by Rap Genius.
I used a research methodology called token analysis to determine each artist’s vocabulary. Each word is counted once, so pimps, pimp, pimping, and pimpin are four unique words. To avoid issues with apostrophes (e.g., pimpin’ vs. pimpin), they’re removed from the dataset. It still isn’t perfect. Hip hop is full of slang that is hard to transcribe (e.g., shorty vs. shawty), compound words (e.g., king shit), featured vocalists, and repetitive choruses.
