Pit Bull on Viagra

Monday, May 17, 2010

Ingrid the Pit Bull only takes about 4 pills a day:
Ingrid has had a rough life, but you wouldn't know it with her cheery disposition. This loveable Pit Bull arrived at Little Shelter battered, bruised and critically ill, after having been used as a "bait" dog to instigate dog fights, and bred more times than we can count - she was down and out! In addition, Ingrid was diagnosed with heartworm and a severe heart condition that needed regulating immediately to ensure her survival. The staff at Little Shelter knew they would do whatever it took to get Ingrid healthy, even if it meant administering a daily Viagra pill!

look at that sweet lady. oh i wish i could adopt her... breaks my big gay heart to know she was tied to a tree for so long and used so cruelly... and i never thought i would own one... a gay guy with a pit bull terrier is like seeing billy graham in a liquor store... just not expected.

but i had no choice but to rescue a precious caramel pit pup tied to a tree with no socialization and little food/water. i talked the owner into letting me raise him and they agreed. took him home and i fell. i fell hard. i've owned many dogs and work extensively with the local rescue league (who immediately kills pits when they receive them) but i've never experienced love like i was receiving from this little guy.

i imagine how i would react if tied up 24/7 with no interaction/food/water/and regular reminders to fight. i wouldn't stop licking the angel who saved me, for sure.

i decided to discover my own truth about these creatures so i went to work socializing him with my present pack: male doberman "rocco", male yellow lab "pete", and female am.eskimo/pom katrina rescue "sugar". deebo the pit bull fell in step without skipping a beat and i began to train him as i do all my dogs: cesar milan style... i expect them to be calm submissive, well behaved, and balanced (maybe i will be one day!). i exercise, discipline, then love, as cesar suggests. and deebo took to the training quickly and is hyper-responsive - no question he definitely wants to make me happy.

these terriers are a very smart breed and i didn't know this. he is also a cuddler and wants to nestle 24/7. he's just as human friendly to all as he can be. and quite needy for love and attention from anyone he meets.

its important to realize these are very, very social dogs who absolutely must have regular human interaction - chaining them out in the back yard or woods all the time hurts them psychologically - think of how prisoners in solitary confinement eventually lose their mind.

for this reason and more, we cannot blame these dogs when they are aggressive after living in such deplorable conditions.

regardless, responsible owners should and do go the extra mile raising APBT's - i always take extra precaution such as a very strong harness and muzzle to walk him - when deebo is out in public, he is muzzled. no exceptions. i want strangers to not feel afraid and engage me... so they can see how deebo responds to them, even muzzled - that tongue reaches them in spite of the muzzle and after a few minutes, most ask me to take it off when they feel the incredible, pure love...

i also crate him when i'm not present, etc. and take no chances leaving him with my pack while i'm away. i also support local responsible dog ownership ordinances, as long as they apply to all dogs. any responsible APBT owner will do these things and more.

sadly, he recently started to show aggression to my gentle floppy eared dobie "rocco" over a toy, and i've had to separate them... so my next journey will be stopping this behavior - this is certainly not breed specific, as many males do not like other males.

and this big bad pit knows that the little white pom mix princess rules - she has no problem putting him his place by snapping at him if he eyes her chew toy a few seconds too long.... always makes me giggle.

and there's so much more... long story short: the gay guy owns a pit bull. and is so grateful for the journey... and i want ingrid!
