If the squirrel was really smart, wouldn't he have just climbed up the pole that holds the food to begin with, and not mess with the middle obstacles at all?

I think the point is you can't climb up that part of the course, that's why you have to go through obstacles.

It was given parts of the puzzle in succession. As soon as it solved one problem, they'd put another one on the end, and so on. It was done for a British tv show in the eighties.
