I think I'm gonna make a similar comparison between a schoolbus and a 4x4, and thus 'prove' that a schoolbus sucks at driving through terrain. Too easy...

What the iPad has and a netbook not

+ Touch screen
+ Couch friendly user interface
+ 3G
+ GPS
+ 10H battery life
+ Speed?
+ VGA out
+ IPS screen (decent color accuracy and view angle)

Unknown said...

Then DONT BUY IT!!! And stop crying!

P>> said...

lol, that quote is out of context :p
he wasnt comparing netbooks with the ipad when he said that ^^

he said that there is absolutely no point in buying a netbook if u have a smartphone and laptop, cuz netbooks cant do anything that those cant;
and then he introduced the ipad as a 3rd kind of device, that is better than laptops in some points, like web browsing experiense and some others that i forgot :)

Anonymous said...

But if you have an iPhone there's no point buying a iPad.

AHH! Forget it, there's no point getting through to these Apple people, a deficiency of common sense runs strong through them.

+ Touch screen
Some netbooks have touch screens, all netbooks are upgradable with a touch screen kit.

+ Couch friendly user interface
ASUS's Linux is user friendly.
+ 3G
AT&T has 3G capable netbooks.
+ GPS
Netbooks can have bluetooth and usb attached GPS modules.
+ 10H battery life
I can assure you the ipad wont have 10 hours of battery life, sorry they lie. The 6 cell netbooks have about 6h, I bet it's better than the Ipad.
+ Speed?
Atom processors versus a cellphone processor, Netbook wins.
+ VGA out
My netbook has a VGA output? Uhhh wtf are you talking about

+ IPS screen (decent color accuracy and view angle)
My netbook has a glass lcd, it looks good.

Unknown said...

@Arjaan...

Might want to check your facts, because netbooks can come with 3G networking, and my EeePC gets 10 hours of battery life, as well as having a VGA port. And USB GPS devices are pretty common as well, making it an easy add-on. And it's fairly fast too, it loads any program within reasonable time.

Anonymous said...

+ Touch screen --- hack the eee book, this is possible with open source utilities.

+ Couch friendly user interface --- either way its on your lap...

+ 3G -- At&T haha right, plus you can get adapters to put a laptop on to 3g and still comes out cheaper.

+ GPS - you really gonna carry this into the woods?

+ 10H battery life - net books are good up to 12 hrs, just check various specs.

+ Speed? - Bet the Ipad cant add more ram at a later point

I don't get it.....All this talk about something new yet isn't...then this what boarders on an obsession in defending this something new that isn't...Kinda reminds me of another sales pitch with all the fervor and hoopla we experienced a year ago which was as much smoke as this....

Lets focus on the real problems we have here in our nation...Lets focus on Washington! not ipads,Tigers or bradgalinas that the media whats us caring about we should care more about why Interpol now has full diplomatic immunity in our nation? Where is our money that the Fed is spending? Who really is the Fed? Where is the Hope and Change?

These are the just a few of the real issues...ask your representative these and any others you have and quit whining about the small stories they are feeding us...Wake up damn it.

Anonymous said...

@arjaan
Not gonna argue with the touch screen but...
+couch friendly UI? Try typing with that thing on your lap on the couch without craning you neck or having it slide around

+3G, GPS? Not for 500 dollars. That's gonna cost you an extra 100-200

+10h battery? Bull. betting on around 6 same as many netbooks

+Speed? Short answer: no. Most netbook cpus are at least 1 ghz or faster. Also, netbook cpus are designed as PC cpus, not some proprietary chip that can't run anything else

+VGA out? Practically all netbooks have this, while the ipad needs an extra adapter

+IPS? Yet another big word created by the industry. Viewing angle, bla bla. For this to help anything, you'd probably need to be viewing almost at 180 degrees from the tablet.

Anonymous said...

forget netbooks... for 500$ you can get a half decent laptop, not a netbook but a full fledged laptop with upwards of 250 gig harddrives bluetooth and standard 3g

People don't really understand the concept of a smartbook. It basically is meant to fill the gap between a desktop and a smartphone for those that own a smartphone and desktop. A portable low cost, easy to replace, mobility device, that provides more usability than a smartphone but, wont fit in your pocket, so only used while stationary not whilst walking. For argumentative, get an over bed table and use it in the lounge with a full fledged desktop, it works really well.

My Asus Eee 1005HA is listed as having a 10 hour battery. Under windows XP it gets 12 while surfing the web and having multiple apps open. How is that for netbooks "not having a 10 hour battery?" I'm so disgusted with Apples snobby attitude towards netbooks that I'm more than likely going to sell ALL of my Apple gear. Windows 7 has changed the game while Apple continually shoots itself in the foot. Apple, you've really f'd up with this one.

What the iPad has and a netbook not

+ Touch screen (oooooh not that big of a deal with a netbook or any type of computer what are we 6?)
+ Couch friendly user interface (your dumb)
+ 3G (clear internet = 4G through USB which the iMaxiPad doesnt have)
+ GPS (again some have it built in otherwise theres a program for that {MS Streets and Trips with GPS Locator}
+ 10H battery life {your dumb if you even need to use it that long before plugging it in, and I highly doubt it if you have wifi or 3G active}
+ Speed? {you can buy a netbook with a 16GB SSD but you also pay half the cost of the iMaxiPad}
+ VGA out {i believe you were thinking of a netbook here because netbooks have VGA out and some now have HDMI out! check HP's DM3 series... oh and the iMaxiPad does not}
+ "IPS screen (decent color accuracy and view angle)" (Ok usually when i use my laptop its pointed directly at me... only a douche would angle his as such.. so shut your mouth)

Mac fanboys are just too funny. iPad is not an innovation. It's a step down from a netbook, for the price of two netbooks. No Flash Support, No Multitasking, No Expandability..yeah..iPad...innovation...from 1995...

Anonymous said...

3G, in an IPad costs $130 more. The IPad has nothing that a Netbook with Linux can not do. Even the boot time is better if you use Moblin.

For $300 (and more since the price range is $499-$729) I can get a Netbook with ALL the gimmicks I want. I have USB, Card Reader (2 to be precise) and Touchpad kits cost $80. Battery, well I can buy a second and third that is charged.

I own it and no one uninstalls my APPS. If you have to much money and you want to show the world how obscenely rich you are, be my guest and buy an Ipad.

I agree that the IPAD is a joke. Touch screen is a downgrade from the trusty, more comfortable and powerful keyboard. However I have NEVER liked widescreen, and think the ipad has the advantage of being tall vs. wide.

But honestly, how does apple pretend to not let their users have flash??? I agree that the ipad is a waste of money and a joke.

Anonymous said...

Get a netbook without an OS and put linux on it. That makes for an even more powerful netbook for even cheaper.

Anonymous said...

yaaaaaaaaaah put LINUX.. jajaja imagine how a ipad with LINUX, will look.. jejejeje funny talks.. peace. it will make the big diff...

Comparing the iPad to a netbook is like comparing apples to oranges. (no pun intended)
They are two different devices with very different purposes.
This is what, I think, the iPad critics are missing. It's not trying to be a computer. It's an interface that has the ability to have relatively inexpensive applications written for it in an attractive and practical package. This is far more usable than an iPhone for many purposes because of the size of the screen. I could never have a virtual mixer for my music recording application or a controller for my video editing that was truly usable on something as small as an iPhone and touchscreens with windows or OSX do no have the software to provide what I need. I look forward, for instance, t using an app that, for instance, Adobe will inevitable make that allows me to have intuitive control in ways that I have never though of. People need to think outside the box on this.

any of you fools ever used a souped up mac pro? with a 30" apple display, with win7 installed on a secondary drive.. running maya on osx.. playing games in win7, final cut pro, geez, people who say macs are for hipsters just dont get it. and you want power from an ipad? it's a CONSUMPTION DEVICE. something that is relaxing and pleasant to use. I agree that no flash is a pain in the ass, but compared to some of microsofts bullshit moves it isnt so bad.. IE6 anyone?

Unknown said...

ie6 is 2 generations old....and while I don't use Internet Explorer...I use firefox....you bring up an excellent point...and this is choice. With any netbook you have a choice and can alter the device in ANY way you see fit and the Apple police aren't going to knock down your door and take away your toys.

Anonymous said...

ipad doesn't need a fast processor... only has to deal with one program at a time, tough work!!

Anonymous said...

to the guy with the apples to oranges thing... how the crap can you call the apps inexpensive?? while everything on the pc/mac has a free alternative, plus your spending a crap load of money on it to begin with? also, to the guy who calls us fools.... ever try souping up a custom built pc? get any size screen, any ammount of drives, any ammount of operating systems including osx, any anything, for probably half the price? Now don't go telling me apple has better support, if you build it yourself you can fix it yourself and still not be paying nearly as much.
Also try gettin a nice good expensive ASUS computer if you can't build, best brand I've seen yet.

I really think these people shooting down the netbooks should look at the Gigabyte T1028 x netbooks. Swivel Touchscreen with Stylus, HD resolution, Optional Built in 3G modem, Huge battery life >6 hours (I really believe that the iPad won't have a 10 hour battery life). Apple has lost a law-suit before in overshooting battery life estimates. The netbook, I'm talking about isn't even new anymore, I bet there are much better ones by now. Also this is so trivial but just google a bit for the new up and coming linux "pad" style PCs.

please don't compare laptop vs ipad .. laptop already superior than ipad (we all know that).. ipad is only for hmmm .. for mmmm .. for pll who are love to waste their money .. if you want to great hand toy just wait to psp2 or something else SONY invent ..

Anonymous said...

Dont be too hard on people who buy IPADS.
these group of people are afraid of the keyboard...

they're the kind that buys a new Mac,
after a year of no maintainence and wonders why it slows down.

they will also buy a mac when apple releases a new mac.

anything apple, they must have.
cos anything apple is simple.

these simple stuff are perfect for them.

Anonymous said...

I can see that the iPad is not trying to replace the netbook. But it cant even replace what it's TRYING to replace. Its an iPhone that doesn't fit in your pocket, an Ebook reader that's harder on your eyes and less battery life, a web browsing device without flash. I just don't understand the appeal.

Anonymous said...

time to start selling your apple stocks...

Anonymous said...

You lack the ability to spell and to identify that the iPad when turned on it's side becomes "widescreen".

Saying this however the iPad is certainly an overpriced tool, what is the point in paying such a large amount of money for something that is essentially an overgrown iPhone? They advertise it as a device that is perfect for internet browsing but it isn't. Ergonomically it's a dream but it lacks flash support, that's the main flaw in the iPad. So much internet content is dependent on flash within websites, once Apple release (and they inevitably will) a Mac with touchscreen capabilities then that will be something to shout about.

Anonymous said...

Lots of Apple fanboys in here, lol.

The fact of the matter is that the iPad is an overly expensive device. Had it been several hundred dollars less, it might be something to consider.

All these points may not be perfect, but it doesn't change the fact that a netbook is far more versatile than the iPad.

Oh, and the Asus T91 DOES have a touchscreen... and if I want to use Apps, I have my iPhone for that.

Personally, I agree with people when they say that if you don't like it, don't buy. I plan not to buy it. But it just kind of seems like a step back doesn't it? I mean, upgraded screen, and fun big-boy-iphone OS, but HORRIBLY compromised internal hardware.

"and then he introduced the ipad as a 3rd kind of device, that is better than laptops in some points, like web browsing experiense and some others that i forgot" ~How exactly does something that doesn't even support flash give advanced web browsing experience????

Anonymous said...

@Anonymous who wrote this
First, you need to understand where the iPad is going.

http://digg.com/d31HCrc

This article is crap. Pure crap. The author could not have gotten it more wrong. New World computing will NEVER EVER be single task based for one reason and one reason only. The human brain. The average human can speak 200 words a minute and can think 800 a minute. So while you are thinking about typing an e-mail you are also thinking about what else you have to do today, what you did earlier, and processing surrounding information. (TV, music, people, etc.)

The second issue is the simple vs. open(complex) argument. The analogy with the cars used helps to prove my point. Automatic drivers (simple) typically do not pay attention to the car and when it makes noises that are bad the driver ignores them until the car no longer functions. Manual drivers are more in tune with the car and pay a little bit more attention to the car. This can be tough to do at first but after about a week it becomes second nature and you no longer think about it. This thought process is always running in the back of your mind like breathing. I myself find that driving an automatic feels like a part of the car is missing. This is how I feel when using an apple product or locked down windows product. I can not use the hardware to the full potential if the software puts walls in my way. Similar to the car analogy if you automatic wont shift out of 1st gear to keep things simple then why the hell do you have all the other gears? Simplicity is not always best. It may be better now but it will ultimately fall short in the long run.

Lastly since this is becoming quite a rant is that if we as a society move to this new world format of computing with file systems hidden away from users and controlled by the parent company, who will right the software? How could you write software on a machine that will not let you gain access to the true power of the system. Yes the company behind the new world computer could write the software for you but then you loose innovation and diversity, which is the beauty of the so called "dying" old world style of computing. That is the beauty of UNIX/Linux. There creators said I want to try to do it different. It worked so well that more then half the servers you access on a regular basis use UNIX/Linux as the main OS. Side note, Apple is built off of a Linux kernel(another form of innovation and diversity).

As a final note I feel that this article about computer is wrong and that the iPad will not fail because it is a neat gadget that many people would want. I wouldn't mind having one but after about 30 minutes of playing with it I would switch back to my laptop running Linux since it is open to how I the USER want things to run not how Steve Jobs or apple or Microsoft say things should run.

(please excuse spelling errors as I am a terrible speller)

iPad can not be compared to a netbook for one reason.

Netbook = midget Laptop

iPad = Giant iPhone

these are two different animals

one is useful (take a guess which one)

the other is there drain your pocket

Tony Ronaldo said...

The iPad is nothing more than an over-sized electronic pad created for the sole purpose to catch steve job's electronic periods. We all know how he cried at the unveiling of his precious period-catcher about the "internet being at your palm, wow" ...almost always followed by an awkward silence from the audience. Oftentimes members of the audience refused to clap, if it weren't for the caretakers and cameraman to initiate them.

The iPad - think differently about your electronic periods. If it breaks, you could just put it in between your legs to catch your real period, wow!

Anonymous said...

And the winner is? Do I really need to say it?

Eggs Ackley said...

OK, forget all the bickering about specs. Look at Apple's business model, it's like they intentionally don't want any more of the market share outside of their fanboi base. First, they've made another portable electronic device where you can't replace the battery without sending it off and incurring significant cost. That's just stupid. Just like their computers and all their other gizmos, they use a closed architecture so that no one outside of an authorized Apple manufacturer/distributor/retailer can sell and/or repair their devices which results in guaranteed excessively high prices due to no competition (e.g I can buy a 1tB internal HD for my PC for $79.99, the cheapest I can find the same thing for a Mac is $284.99). And from personal experience with their iPod (the only Apple device I've ever owned, or ever will), when it needed repair I was told to send it to them and they'll send me a refurbished unit for the low price of $249. I mentioned that I can buy the exact same model new off the shelf for the same price, she somewhat indifferently suggested that I do so. Now there's customer service you can get behind...

Fool me once, shame on you... Those idiots aren't getting me a second time. It's not necessarily the devices they make that are incredibly lame, it's their method of doing business. They seemingly have designed their entire business model just to infuriate and chase away customers. Imagine if your car was built and marketed this way. You need new tires, a front-end alignment and a tune-up you say? Drop off your car at the nearest iCar dealer, and in about 6 weeks we'll call you to come pick up a refurbished car. And by the way, that'll be $27,995.00...

And since you brought it up, there is no current style book that even remotely suggests that three exclamation points for added emphasis is considered proper grammar.

That means it's crippled. This thing is setup to be a front for the itunes store. You can only run progams and content from apple. Go for idummies

Anonymous said...

In some ways iPad is just an iPhone XL. To truly be fair one must examine the intended usage to determine the best tool for the job. I challenge any iPad user to type up a paper, with quick peeks at the web for source material on the iPad. The touchscreen and lack of multitasking(at least for now) make that a major no-go. Also, with Apple trying to destroy Flash so that every video/sound clips we see/hear has to be purchased, will you be able to enjoy all your favorite services? (Netflix anyone?) All this and not so much as a single inquiry to durability? iPhones already have their fair share of criticism for screen breakage, so add in a larger screen, more gravity bait, I mean weight, and a somewhat cumbersome device to hold and you've got to question that scenario. It's new, let's all just relax and see how it all works out.

Dingotime said...

For future reference: having a mac says nothing about your character, attitude, or value as a human being. It just means you prefer a simpler operating system.

So stop being elitist asses, lose your blind faith in apple, and recognize this product for what it is: overpriced and underfunctional.

The iPad is not for you, mr geek. It is for all the other 90% of people that have had it with the traditional OS bullshit. No one cares about hardware. They care about ease of use. Prepare to be surprised by how quickly you all have to eat your words.

I'm no apple fanboy. As far as the desktops go; they are over-priced, just as hard to use as windows, and under-powered. Apple hit it out of the park with the iPhone, because they decided to do what is right for people, not for geeks. They are doing it now with the iPad, and don't be surprised if everyone is using something a lot like it, and I mean like its interface and simplicity, in 5 years.

The iPad is the sound the the traditional OSes make as they die.

Anonymous said...

Sorry about barking up an old tree, but I will put my two coppers in: Mr. Jobs sold this to his Tech base as a ersatz netbook, since Apple doesn't have the tech to go small (for some reason, their desktops can). Maybe its that bloated OS? At least there is hacked flavors of Windows with all the proprietary crap dug out, but I haven't seen this from the Apple Dumpling Gang...and Linux if you're geek-minded. Apple should go back to doing what it does best and build Comps for CAD and Graphic Design...

Nowhere close to as funny as the iPhone Vs Rock image that came around. That was much more accurate.

You haven't even given full comparisons considering you can have video out and 64g of SSD (Which people are willing to spend hundreds of dollars on in the current market).

you can also add on a keyboard for a few dollars and flip it on its side for widescreen.

Don't worry.. you'll do better next time u try to be funny.
