Today, they make jokes about that. Reuters:
Horses were first domesticated on the plains of northern Kazakhstan some 5,500 years ago -- 1,000 years earlier than thought -- by people who rode them and drank their milk, researchers said on Thursday.

I remember drinking horse milk once, when I was a kid. It was a fad here for a while, because it was supposed be good for all sorts of things (I'm talking '97-'98 here)
