Creative advertising of the day: Subway ad shows model's hair blowing around everytime a train arrives

Friday, February 28, 2014

The digital advertising screens on the platform of a subway train station in Stockholm, Sweden, were rigged with ultra sonic sensors, to create the impression that the hair of the models in the ad blows around as though windswept by the arriving trains.

President Obama announces the building of Iron Man

Friday, February 28, 2014

In case you've missed it, during a press conference on Tuesday, President Obama made a rather humorous announcement, that the Government is building Iron Man. It was, of course, a joke, but, apparently, there's some truth to it. From The Vrege:
The United States government has in fact been creating a suit designed to give its wearer superhuman strength and perception. Called the Tactical Assault Light Operator Suit (TALOS), the US Army announced work on it last May and said it was hoping to have an initial suit within a year, with an eye toward potentially having it on the field within three.

The suit truly sounds like a work of science fiction. It would give its wearer full-body bullet protection and include a built-in weapon of its own. It would also be able to monitor its wearer's vitals — including body and skin temperature, heart rate, and hydration — by resting against their skin. A display on the suit would show its remaining power, and potentially much more. The Army wants TALOS to use networking and an onboard computer to give its wearer an enhanced awareness of the situation and action around them, and it's easy to imagine that could be shown to them in a manner a bit like what Tony Stark sees inside his helmet.

Book of the day: Movies R Fun

Thursday, February 27, 2014

Movies R Fun!, written by San Francisco-based artist Josh Cooley, depicts scenes from famous R-rated films in the style of children's books.
Let's face it, reading sucks . . . but movies are fun! In this children's picture book parody for grown-ups, Pixar writer and artist Josh Cooley presents the most hilariously inappropriate—that is, the best—scenes from contemporary classic films in an illustrated, for-early-readers style. Terrifying, sexy, and awesome scenes from such favorite films as Alien, Rosemary's Baby, Fargo, Basic Instinct, Seven, The Silence of the Lambs, Apocalypse Now, The Shining, and many more are playfully illustrated and captioned to make reading fun and exciting for kids who never grew up. A sly celebration of the things fans love most about these legendary films (and movies in general), this is one book that probably should not be read at bedtime.

Stuff Russians do these days: Set themselves on fire and jump off a roof into a pile of snow

Thursday, February 27, 2014

This video filmed in Barnaul, Russia, shows 22-year-old amateur stuntman Alexander Chernikov set himself on fire and then jump off a five-story building into a pile of snow.
Dressed in bright purple, the 22-year-old spent a week preparing for the dizzying stunt, which was being filmed by his accomplice on the ground.

He searched Barnaul, Russia, for a building to jump from - to ensure his dramatic fall would be cushioned by a thick layer of snow on the ground.

Then he bought asbestos cloth which he wrapped around his legs under his trousers to stop himself from being burnt.

He said: "I climbed onto the roof and chose the angle from which to jump better, with a much better distribution of snow."

From the archives: Probably the oldest selfie ever

Thursday, February 27, 2014

A photo taken in December 1920 by five gentlemen working at the Byron Company, a commercial photography studio founded in Manhattan in 1892.

From Fast Company:
Snapped in New York on the roof of the Marceau Studio on Fifth Avenue, across the street from St. Patrick's Cathedral, this picture features five mustached photographers holding an antediluvian analog camera at arm's length. Because this camera would have been too heavy to hold with one hand, Joseph Byron is propping it up on the left, with his colleague Ben Falk holding it on the right. In the middle, you have Pirie MacDonald, Colonel Marceau, and Pop Core.

Map of the US, as seen by attacking aliens in the movies

Thursday, February 27, 2014

Mandatory maps the most important places in the United States, according to movies that feature alien attacks.
I’m not sure why every group of aliens that have invaded the planet in movies have done so with the exact same game plan. They never go for nuclear power plants or

come in with a death ray that evaporates Middle America. I’m assuming their map of the country looks exactly like this. Can someone ask Will Smith and Jeff Goldblum to make sure?

Skier uses metal detector to find phone lost on slope

Wednesday, February 26, 2014

After losing his iPhone while skiing on a slope in Stratton, Youtube user Chris Wong returns a week later with a metal detector to look for it, documenting it with a helmet cam.
I went skiing with my friend Lane last week and went down a tough run (for me anyway) with tons of moguls. Flipped over one and wiped out without zipping up my jacket pocket and my phone must have dropped out. Tried to go back the next day and look for it but it was just too crazy by hand, and we didn't really know exactly where to look.

Was really annoyed back home after having to buy a new phone... so then started looking at cheap metal detectors on Amazon, and went back the following weekend. Everyone was telling me I was crazy so I made sure everything was on GoPro. The phone was in a Mophie Pack which helped protect the ports etc from the snow. The pack still works too!

I'm here today because I am gay. And because… maybe I can make a difference. To help others have an easier and more hopeful time. Regardless, for me, I feel a personal obligation and a social responsibility.

I also do it selfishly, because I am tired of hiding and I am tired of lying by omission. I suffered for years because I was scared to be out. My spirit suffered, my mental health suffered and my relationships suffered.
