Phonebloks - a great concept idea for smartphones

Wednesday, September 11, 2013

Dutch designer Dave Hakkens came up with an at least interesting idea aimed at revolutionizing the mobile phone industry, with Phonebloks - a cellphone made of changeable parts, and he needs your help to turn it into reality.

Visit the project's official website - when it's going to be online - or its Thunderclap page until so, to show your support.

About time we can have a phone that's easy to text with and only does calls and texts with a great battery life and no other bull$hit. It should be the next nokia. Origanal nokia's were great and everyone got by with them. I'm shure we were all proud of our nokia phones. No regrets

brilliant concept. if i were able to produce investment capital, this would be the perfect project. the elimination of waste is something that will drive sales to a place other devices only dream of...and lets not forget to mention that customizability is a way for each end user to have a device that is specifically taylored to them.

Technically a good idea.
Even better said: It's actually how it should be. More ecological, clearer, enduring, scalable, efficient, sustaining,...

But... and a big one. This is not the world we're living in. Businesse thrive on things that brake, otherwise the profit dry's out. Why do cars break down after 10 years or so? Well this is not a technical question, i can tell you that.
Even more, do you know that the first modern light bulbs where so robustly made that that could burn for more than 50 years without breaking? the lighting producnets (like philips) were almost victim of their own succes. So they focused their R&D on making the lamp go broke after already a few thousand hours. Well that's thinking about the profit of the future. In other words sucking out the money of the people, or paying to much for the quality you as a customer are not getting.

So to say, it's not about the technical standards and possibilities it's about profit also being a brake on evolution and durability.

Profits would be a driving factor, but also because the blocks are interchangeable you could have people upgrading to the next level of blocks as time goes on. Better batter level, 4g to 5g, new technology that comes out, etc. Also I'm sure parts would break and would need replacing.
Then if this gets popular enough, the company could develop other products with the same idea. Imagine a customizable car that can change its seats or radio easily to the ones you want. You could custom order a car just for yourself over the internet. There is a lot of possibility and potential for profit here.

wow ! I am absolutely on board with this concept.

I would say that this is the greatest idea i have seen in the last five years. I really hope that this concept comes to the market and soon.

Obviously this would be a great benefit to consumers. As a result, WE collectively would be very interested in the concept. Who doesn't want more choices? I hope they get this funded.

Supporter here as well :)

Great idea,totally support it

Anonymous said...

Amazing (:

Anonymous said...

sounds great!

Anonymous said...

The idea is good, but the technical difficulties to make this is even greater. It is just impossible to use a wire to transfer data or use it to supply the power for the phone. Being a art designer is not enough to plan a phone, you have to understand the current technical limits. i would said its impossible to make this in this size for 10+years.

Anonymous said...

I want one!!!!!

Anonymous said...

Oh yes I would most definitely buy one of these. This is the best thing I have ever seen!!

i woud love to have such a phone like this...
all of the companies woud have someting of this...
ist like iphone just that it isnt aplle whos haveing all phe profit...:D
PS:where is the site to give my voice?...

Anonymous said...

Great idea and should be done but points to concider; 1) will the blocks on the back fall off? 2) how much will the cost 3) how much will the phone cost as this will only need to be bought once 4) not too convinced on the size or shape and 5) it looks kinda ugly.
Putting this aside, its an amazing idea and 1 phone will be sold but in each individuals personal preference.

Unknown said...

Brilliant idea, but I doubt the large companies would embrace it. They prefer to make a new phone each ear, so that you'll *want* to throw away your old one. And they'll prefer to make things different, so that you'll need to choose between either of them...

Anonymous said...

i like this non status ego friendly adaptable machiene.

Unknown said...

Great idea

Anonymous said...

I see this s a technical troll and still it does not cover blocks recycling issue.

GOOD JOB. WILL BUY FOR SURE. WORTH IT. MAKE IT REALITY.

Anonymous said...

That's an a great idea, good luck guys, make it reality, i'll buy it for shure. like this idea very much !!!)

Yea.. this is a great idea.
But again this video talks about all phone companies working together. That will never happen either. That wpuld mean sharing the wealth. And have you noticed apple? Its the same as the car. Every 6 weeks they come out with a new phone design that's the exact same as the last one.
Making only one phone that will last will make everyone of our phone developers go bankrupt cause we wont be spending our money every so often on the newest model.
This is revolutionary. But it wont happen.

Concept brilliant, though to have though reality is will be expensive in comparison to other phones and will not be able to keep up with the competition!

My background is in computers and It - it annoys me how Intel and AMD are constantly changing the amount of sockets and bridges in the cpu market. Yet they do so because changing such factors drastically effects performance. Further more to have a ultra high bandwidth to every slot in phone enabling a complete re-shaping of phone would be expensive. Its why in computer terms we have pci express 16 times slots as well as 1 times slots! A 1 times slot card would work in a higher bandwidth.....
I am not saying give up on the idea. Rather reality is a less flexible version of the phone I have another suggestion why not try to build a refugee city which has borders and fences yes but represents more a town then a prison-cell. Where Australians can get paid to move in or work within the boundaries of the town, with schools to teach English! Where refugee's can even choose to stay on once citizen ship is obtained and work and live but then are free to move in or out of the town!

Lets get creative with solutions! I think the problem is not with the kids but its how could we therefor implement non-detition of children in a fair and just way, with out creating a whole new set of sub problems be it the removal of kids from family, or sexiest legislation that favor mothers or discrimination against those who do not have kids! I for one am not sure of the solution! What we have is Terrible yet I am not sure what a better system maybe the way forward.

Anonymous said...

This is great! Please make this phone to make our lives better!

Anonymous said...

You have a point. But parts would still break and wear out. Only instead of replacing the whole phone for a cracked screen or dead battery you only have to replace those parts. When your car breaks down or needs a new part do you go out and buy a new car? (some people may), but most people would just buy new breaks or a new bumper.

This is the best idea I've seen since the invention of the cellphone! I hope it will push through and get reality! I'l buy it

Unknown said...

Amazing concept! Lets get this ball rolling. Phone companies get enough $$$ from monthly services...give us a break on the phones please.

Anonymous said...

Great idea hope its not to expensive to buy an to maintain tbh

Unknown said...

Hi guys,

It is an great idea to not consume more than what we need.
But! The official webside is not operating and 100% bcs of the cellphone producer. Like hacking the websides.
Be attention on it for better world.

Anonymous said...

I want one! My friends want one! LET PHONE BLOCKS THRIVE!!!

Anonymous said...

It should be a block with IOS another with Andorid and so on. That way you would be able to change the software as you like. Exelent ideea, I would definitely buy it.

Anonymous said...

I love this idea, and i would see myself buying it if it was for sale.
If i could give you one piece of advice is keep trying , because its a great idea.
Have you considered going on a show like a dragons den or shark tank or what ever like that it could really give you some exposure and you could get some investors .
Best of luck!

Coolest phone this is the way it should go upgrade it any way you want awesome I want one

Anonymous said...

rly,rly,rly,rly,rly,rly, REALLY!!!! WANT THIS!!!!!

Unknown said...

it is the best phone so far want it rly rly rly rly ryl rly Badly !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Anonymous said...

The solution is to keep the phone longer for example there still are iphone 2 s working to this day , you dont need to make another model each year. But people are brainwashed by marketing and social status , and they will buy a new phone even if their current one is allmost the same as the new one...
