Read the book. Almost the whole story is a fantasy. That's what is so marvelous about it. Remember the "explanation" - that the Orangutan was his mother, that the Zebra was the cabin boy, that the Hyena was the sailor, and that the Tiger was him. Also, what was explained in the book but not mentioned in the movie - that he studied mysticism. You really should look up the meaning of Tsimtsum. Now, does it make sense.?
