Lots of people doing little or no research are jumping on this little bandwagon

Baloney. Killing an elephant is a dick move, unless they're actively trampelling someone.

There is some truth to what he says, not that the way in which he did it + photo ops were all that humane or humble.

Due to overpopulation in recent years, ironically enough from animal conservation measures, many elephants die from hunger and/or devastate full areas of wildlife so quickly and thoroughly, that it cannot repair/regrow itself. (This from google research, but also told to me directly by a game warden on a preserve at the border of Zimbabwe and Botswana in 2005)

It's just sad from both sides of the story.

The following seems way more egregious, IMO (Killig to win a bet??): http://news.sky.com/home/world-news/article/15277040
