100 million hand-painted porcelain sunflower seeds

Friday, October 15, 2010

I don't know if someone actually counted them, but this is the project undertaken by chinese conceptual artist Ai Weiwei, as a commission in Tate Modern's Unilever series.
Chinese conceptual artist ai weiwei has filled the museum's turbine hall with millions of life-sized sunflower seed husks made out of porcelain. the collective effort of a number of specialists from jingdezhen, china, the hand-crafted seeds were individually formed and painted. the installation encourages visitors to touch and walk on the carpet of tiny replicates.

With a billion people in China, I could see a sweat shop easily doing those.

You can't walk on it any more though as they were all getting crushed and turning to dust which was filling the turbine hall.

Shame that.
