Funny thing is, they're NOT at all like that. Flying ants are new kings and queens, going off to establish new colonies. They are both bigger than regular workers, which this seems to be a photo of. The queen is pretty big, the abdomen is much, much larger compared to the thorax, unlike in this photo. The kings also have a different shape to them, but are smaller than queens. It's the queens you seem to see more of, however. But its not like the average person actually looks closely at anything, hey.
