Narcoleptic squirrel

Monday, February 1, 2010

From Youtube:
We had this wild gray squirrel in our back yard that I could never get on film that kept passing out. I finally left the video camera on the kitchen counter on a regular basis trying to catch it on film. Over a few months of filming I was able to get two minutes on film. The amazing thing here is that it lived in 80 foot tall trees and we saw it for a period of six months.

My guess is that your squirrel found some fermented berries and was just plain old drunk. Apparently, it happens to squirrels more often than one would think.

I'm now officially a squirrel nerd.

yeah, that is probably not narcolepsy. cuz he keeps eating after he hits the ground and pretty much gets right back up. it just looks like he has some balance issues. or like he's drunk.

Yeah, definitely not sleeping. Makes you wonder what he has been eating though...

Awww. maybe he has Motor neurone disease

That's truly really sad, to me cuz I love animals and he isn't like falling asleep =C

yes, that squirrel is definitely drunk, this happens in autumn, when animals eat fermented berries, this happens often in sweden with elves!

rabies anyone

Ok, so rabid Swedish elves with motor neuron disease are giving alcohol to narcoleptic squirrels?

I think there's epilepsy involved, there are a couple spots where it really looks like the little guy is having a seizure.

Hmm, wonder how much alcohol is in a squirrel? How many drunk squirrels would it take to get me drunk? How would I drive back from the forest afterward? Should I keep one of the squirrels sober enough to drive me home?

Can you fish for squirrels like you can fish, like with a pole and bait on a hook? What kind of bait would a squirrel take that would be big enough to hide the hook? Would it be easier to poison them, like the pigeons in the park? But then they wouldn't be edible, and I wouldn't be doing it for the fun of watching them fall out of the sky onto unsuspecting pedestrians or drivers.

Yeah, hooks would be best. Maybe a smaller hook would work, it's not like you're going to hook a 10lb. squirrel. At least I hope not.

Why don't they call fishermen hookers?

Do Elvish Swedes fish?

yeah not sleepy, probably drunk or somethings off with the balance. My bet is drunk or it would have been dead by now

poor guy =(. definitely not narcolepsy.

it is to narcolepsy. you can fall asleep for a nanosecond

That's sad. I'm no squirrel expert but, that looks like a seizure or he suffered some trauma. I hope he wears his medical alert bracelet in case he falls from a tree.

Uhhh...should call a vet.

The mist likely think is fermented berry intoxication. It may have a neurological disorder, but it likely would not have been able to evade predators to reach adulthood if thats the case. Rabies would be a very small possibility. Small mammals rarely survive attacks from rabid animals, but can get the 'dumb rabies' variation of the virus.

Considering the squirrel was hungry, intoxication would be my bet.
BTW I am a wildlife biologist.

vertigo

I think it looks like he just has no sense of balance. An ear infection would do that.

what have you been putting in the seeds? LOL J/K

Squirrel drunk from rotted (oops i mean 'fermented') pumpkin: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4ikH9ZRcF2Q

It looks like he just has a balance issue, poor thing, I hope its not some sort of ear infection or something. I would agree set a live trap and see if someone might be able to diagnose it (wildlife specialist) but thats just me.

I was in Etobicoke, Toronto and photographed a squirrel doing the same thing - I was told it was Distemper - all messages seem to say the same thing - they are sick or hurt...something reflected all over our planet. Having said that, I come from Africa where the elephants and monkeys eat a fermented fruit called the marula - they get so drunk it is hilarious and no human taught them to do that!

lol drunk squirrel.

It was poisoned its the after effects. I have eaten squirrel before but this is cruel to make the damn thing suffer and then post it online for our amusement
