It closely approximates part of a Fibonacci Spiral. The Fibonacci Spiral can be draw by creating a series of squares in the correct positions and sizes and connecting points of them with the smoothest possible curve.

you misunderstand our friend here. a golden rectangle is a rectangle with the longer side is one unit long, and the shorter side is ~.618 units long. with that, you make a square with edge length .618, and another golden rectangle.
this can be repeated to make a fractal, which forms a spiral, but this is not actually occurring in the picture.
Whoever made this failed the gay test.
