you forgot to point out how good the software Apple will put on it is in comparison, also left out that the iPad comes with the 3G option something unheard of in 2003. I mean yeah it'd be nice with usb ports, but everything else just takes up room, with a usb port it would have to be very much thicker and nobody likes thick.

Lex Med said...

to anonymus,
"nobody likes thick." that's not what she said...

Anonymous said...

some people like thick just fine. :)

Anonymous said...

Its OS what counts. Also yoy forgot 3G, Bluetooth, WiFi version, RAM memory, thickness, ppi resolution, multitouch (because that HP tablet has no multi-touch), accelerometer, coolness, apps, media formats and other stuff which is truly important.

I think this is an Apple to orange comparison...these two devices aren't designed to do exactly the same thing.

Anonymous said...

And the iPad does have a headphone jack. If you're going to do something like this at least check your facts.

Anonymous said...

HP's aren't really thet much thicker, and you cant use Flash in the iPad, in the HPs you can, and you cant run more than 1 program at once while in the HP's you can... it's just a big iphone without the phone or the camera...

Sorry, I don't spend much time on sites that have such obnoxious advertisements. Then, it's kinda like TV.

lotech said...

The main problem with that is that half the stats are wrong for the iPad.

Features the iPad do have
stereo speakers
heaphone socket
USB & SD via adaptor
VGA output (+ TV Out).

I think most of the pundits that have seen and touched one think its a bigger deal than we internet give it credit too.
Besides - as everyone else will bring out one in the next 12 months but with windows or linux on it that'll be similar and give you a different OS. Its never a bad thing when Apple bring out new shit.

VIA ADAPTER?

How much does that cost?

iProduct! Whatever it is, you'll buy it.

I think most people here forget that tc1100 was made SEVEN years ago, and you know just how fast technology develops nowadays

Anonymous said...

i am using my tc1100 now, it's running windows 7. so now has brilliant hand writing recognition. true no multi touch, but it is a wacom pen with 512 pressure levels, and has wifi and bluetooth. just putting an ssd drive for almost instant boot. and yes it 7 years old. i was hoping to replace it with an ipad, looks like the ipad could be replaced with a tc1100.

Anonymous said...

I saw the IPAD announcement and was considering buying one to help with school work. Then I remembered that I had a TC1100 sitting on a shelf. I updated the memory to 1.5GB and loaded Windows 7 enterprise. It works great and will work much better than an IPAD or kindle. It is very responsive and other than not having a touch screen, I don't know what else I would need. HP would do well if they would add a touchscreen & release this tablet. Much better than IPAD!!

Anonymous said...

Funny people... You don't have any clue what you are talking about. The iPad has jack for headphones.

WHAT SO if the iPad has "only" 1ghz CPU. My computer from 2004 has 2.7ghz AMD CPU, was fucking expensive back then. Now my laptop has 2.53ghz, and was dead cheap, but still 10 times as quick.

You cant judge on ghz, when there's 7 years in difference. 512 pressure levels.. Wow, the iPad has over 1000 :) Can you use your TC1100 for 10 hours?? And, a pen?? who want to loose the pen every secound week, when i just can use my fingers? :)

The TC1100 is a computer with touchscreen (barely), the iPad is a innovating master piece. Funny though, i never heard of the TC1100 before i read this post. Bet it su**s :) Just saying it like you guys, cause you have never tried the iPad.

Knowing Apples products, you might not be able to use the TC1100 for 10 hours, but you sure won't be able to use the iPad for 7 years!

I once bought the iShuffle when it first came out, a year or two later I could not even get the drivers for it from Apple anymore!

Apple makes products for those that value coolness instead of real value for your money.

Anonymous said...

Backing up what someone else said earlier. I use a tc1100 daily. it has had upgrades over the years (bigger drive, more ram, faster wireless) and it is still my primary machine. The iPad could have been so much more. as it is, I'll stick with the tc1100, it still gets admiring looks everywhere it goes (and it goes everywhere)

To this humble roamer of the internet, the most important factor is the USE of these "iPads" and "tablets" and "slates".

In regards to being used as a personal "larger iPhone" then the iPad is general fail because it could have the ability to be an iPhone that can multitask and bridge the gap between being stuck in a single program at a time and full-fledged-too-much-for-average-person tablet.

However, if Steve Jobs does wish to revolutionize the way we all live and breathe with our electronic machines, he should have made something like the Axion Modbook (a third party company that modifies macbooks into slate Apple books). In fact, I believe they would've gotten away with having the same power as a macbook Air, but getting rid of the keyboard!

I know that the iPad will be, three months or so down the line, a completely new machine with an OS that's more akin to Snow Leopard than the iPhone, and that's what's keeping the TC1100 around so well: it has the slimness and portability of a slate PC but still being...well...a PC. They are given the relatively full gamut of what they would expect to get to do with a more powerful processor and larger screen, but they can tote it around and not bother with the clamshell design that has made convertible PCs so awkward.

To keep things short (too late), I was desperately hoping for Steve Jobs to give a future where all scientists, engineers, and everyone would use a slate, like in all the sci-fi movin' pictures. I dreamt of sad office workers with piles of - not papers - but of slates (a distinct point of irony). Alas and alack, the world lacks a real pointer to that future. The closest to that dream, oddly enough, could've been seven years ago with the TC1100.

You people need to realise that it's not even fully finalized as to what the iPad will be able to do. In the 2-3 months they could add a camera or implement multitasking. (There is already multitasking, just not on 3rd party apps).

Anonymous said...

hello i was thinking of getting an ipad. im an avid apple person. i own 7 macs 2 iphones. but multi tasking on a ipad would be listening to music and doing something else that is not really multi tasking. anyways, im getting a hp tc1100 because i want to be able to watch flash videos, use it to take notes in class, and if i can find my text books for school in ebook format then for that also. i mean i will not be doing to much multitasking but still if i want to i have the ability to. also i listen to local internet radio and with the ipad i wouldnt be able to. i watch the keynote for the ipad and loved it and then it has the iphone os its not so exciting now. dont get me wrong i think it will be a very successful device. but its not for me. well thats my thoughts hope this helps someone out

As a TC100 for many years I can attest that it has so many advantages over an IPAD. First it runs just like a PC meaning Anything you can do on a PC you can do on a TC1100. So instead of 3G, you could run the much better 4G networks on them and just use Skype as your phone. Complete mobile internet at home broadband speeds. Try to do that on an IPAD who are slaves to AT&T who have no 4G networks.
TC100 has full inputs and outputs, USB, microphone, everything you could want. Plug in a USB webcam if you want. Combine that with 4G and you got a totally mobile broadcasting platform. Battery life is better on Ipad, but you could buy a few extra batteries with TC1100 for the price difference. Only real advantage of IPAD is a touchscreen. Have you seen how crappy touch screen responsiveness is? Using a Stylus is So much better, and I don't even know if Ipad has a Stylus, that means you can't even draw on it, no creatng nice notes and diagrams in pen. What idiot thought not to include that which is what Tablets were mainly designed to allow? Also what a crappy small HD they have, also we're talking about 7 years difference in technology! WTF Apple?!

Anonymous said...

I love Apple, love my iPhone - but Apple really did a half-assed job on the iPad. Like many other's have said - it could have been so much more. The proof is that there is more controversy over this device than any other they have offered, and it isn't even out yet. I have a TC1100 - and the reason why I keep it, is that I have yet to find a tablet PC that could replace it's ergonomics and versatility. Eben HP hasn't been able to match it.

Anonymous said...

I still have a TC1100 because I believe that it has the best shape of tablet PC. I also has a macbook pro for the main. I was always wandering why nobody makes such a (like TC1100) type of hw anymore - after TC1100, there has been nothing like it. I welcome finally Apple made such one, in a much nicer way - much slimmer, much lighter, long battery, with multi-touch, and obviously great SW. The one thing I am disappointed about ipad is that it uses iphone OS 4.0. I would like to choose one between iphone OS and osx.

no one would think of using a pin now a days and sorry apple will give provide 140000 application that can build a very reliable product.
btw there is a space for headphones in ipad!!!!

Yes, you're forgetting the software! The software that apparently makes it so awesome that people will shell out piles of money for a vastly outdated piece of hardware that does nothing new just because it looks cool!

Seriously, you Mac fanboys are freakin' sad. Apple is arguably the most oppressive, draconian computer company in the world today and you people just line up and suck it down.

You can find the whole specs for the hp at http://h18000.www1.hp.com/products/quickspecs/11755_na/11755_na.html

As others mentioned, some critical information has been conveniently left out the graphic.

The HP is twice as heavy as the iPad, it's also 60% thicker which means a lot for a device with a 10" screen.

The battery lasts less than 4.5h vs. 10h for the iPad. The 4.5h is with "panel brightness 50%, power management scheme – Laptop/Portable, hard drive, standby and video timers set to never, not external devices connected and all wireless turned off." A review reveals that in real world use you get: " Between 2 hours and 36 minutes and 2 hours and 43 minutes under normal use with with the backlighting and Wi FI on."

The HDD is not solid state on the HP, vs. flash RAM on the iPad.

The iPad has an IPS LCD screen vs. TFT on the HP.

The iPad has 802.11n vs. 802.11g on the HP.

The CPU is an old slow Pentium M vs. a brand new custom ARM chip on the iPad.

It has a fan(!) which coupled with the HDD means a noisy tablet vs. a silent iPad. And from what I've read the HP has a tendency to get very hot.

Bluetooth is optional on the HP, standard on the iPad.

The HP has a pressure sensitive screen vs. multi-touch capacitive on the iPad.

I can only find reviews of the HP dating from 2004, none from 2003.

If you combine all these factors with the fact that the HP costs $2500+ when it was released, it becomes obvious to anyone with half a brain that 6 years later the iPad is simply in line with the evolution of technology and is a reasonable deal at $700 (for the 64GB model)

its funny, i wanted that hp tablet wayy back i thought that is cool. but since it was 2 thosandish and i dint have a job (was still in school) i couldnt afford and i knew enough not to ask for it since i knew my parents wouldnt get it for me. now 7 years later the ipad is out and i cant afford it (or justify it, i have other things i really do need, but barely can afford) go figure!

I've been doing 3G on my tc1100 for years now with a SierraWireless GPRS card. The PCMCIA slot (another expansion iPad doesn't have) holds them quite nicely. Oh yea, and I bought 3 of them for $300 each off ebay with attachable keyboards, docking stations and DVD readers.... iPad has an accelerometer and a car adapter. Whoohoo. $500 to tell me how hard my car crashed while I'm watching a movie on that thing?? No thanks.

Can't compare the two. Yes, the HP TC110 can do a lot more than the iPad, Yes TC1100 is a full fledge computer whereas the iPad is a bridge device. I personally have no need to an iPad since I have a TC1100 and an iPhone, but lets say you are on a 5-10 flight, the iPad will give you the entertainment you need, the HP would've died in a little over 2 hours. Gaming? forget about it. I love my TC1100 for checking up stuff and browsing on the couch, but it does run warm at times and require a pen. iPad would be nice but it does lack many things at this point. They are both great devices, in terms of usefulness, the TC1100 wins because after all it is an actual computer, in terms of entertainment and modern ingenuity and battery life? iPad all the way. people, don't knock the TC1100, if you had one you'll realize HP/Compaq was way ahead of the times. I have an iPhone 3GS, so iPad will be useless to me until they add that camera and OS4.0 is added to it.

Still, 7 years is a lot, and Apple came out with this? I'm little disappointed with Apple on this one. Sure, the Iphone was something new, but the Ipad is barely a developed version of a 7 years old gadget, and in some features, not even that. Propably it's an OK device, but hardly worth the hype.

Hi there

had a TC1100 from 2003 until 2006, loved it. Switched in 2007 completely over to Mac (own 5 now) because I've enough of the M$-related stress at home - which I still have to some extend at work as an admin of our domain.

Were utmost happy to see apple coming with a tablet sort of thing but was unhappy to see it not driven by OS X.

Looked over to HP and the planned new slate and were destroyed to see that they stopped it.

Just bought a 2nd hand TC1100 at ebay.de for 279 € - will try Win7 and Ubuntu DualBoot...

see me smile :-)

Cheers from Cologne/Germany

I'll stick with saying that the iPad isn't bad. It's just missing a good many features, and the price should NOT scale that high with Hard Drive size, and not have to pay for annual updates...

It needs the following: Flash support, Usb port, Stereo sound, Multitasking, some card readers, and a camera/video recorder would be very nice.

Could use the following: Faster, but it's kinda snappy as is, True HD screen size, HDMI port, GPS, and a Keyboard. lastly if it had mac OS X, it wouldn't have the flash problem and probably some other things.

The could use and the needs are opinion based. The needs being what it needs for me to buy one, and the wants that would make me super happy with one.

Just writing from my TC1100...the iPad could be better.

For a device made 6/7 years ago it's impressive.. that HP failed to capitalise on something so promising for it's time reflects very badly on their R & D and marketing depts. As opposed to Apple.

Sure sure HP "did it first" (sort off)

However HP also fucked it up first.

In keeping with the inevitable partisan nature of these threads may I just add that given the choice I'd go for the ipad.. in a flash (no pun intended) ...Oh and multitasking is coming out for os 4.

Idiocracy. Seriously. 7 YEARS!!!!! Your phone in your pocket guys, can do more than this junk. Not even can compare for a computer, rather a phone, without phone capability. No ports, no nothing. Can lite up for 12 hours, and you can read on it. Better if you buy an old "manager calculator" and a flashlight. Will goes for 2 week on battery and still cannot play flash, or multitask.
And people still repeating for its whooo.. :))

Seriusly, put things in context.Think! Dont eat this marketingbullshit, just read! Do some research, understand and choose. Freely. Beeing stupid is not cool..

Why doesn't apple at least put SD or some type of memory slots on their devices? I do like the concept of the iPad but they missed the mark in the execution. Steve Jobs reminds me of a drug dealer; he gives you just enough to keep you wanting more. I can picture him saying "If you like that, then you will love this!" But this turns out to be that, just in a different package. The iTouch got with the iPhone and they had a iPad. Just more of the same!

Mike said...

I'm pretty sure it's just an Apple strategy of keeping their customers wanting more, they give you enough so that you'll hand them your money, but they hold some things off so that you'll hand them more money in a year. I must admit that I'm an Apple Fan-Tard. I was actually stupid enough to buy into the hype of the iPhone and forked over the $599 for the first generation iPhone. I was able to hold myself back an entire 4 weeks after the release to get it. I eventually upgraded to the 3GS which was a MUCH faster phone with more capabilities and better overall user experience. Apple's products have always been about building upon something good and making it "better" with each generation. However we all know what is lacking in the iPod, iPhone and iWhatevers. I'm sure their people know it too. But if they give users everything, they will have no future business, at least not as much. If you are dumb or wealthy enough to buy 1st generation anything, then good for you. But we ALL know there's something else better coming in a few months or year. I DO still use my TC1100 and still love it after all these years. It runs hot as hell sometimes, the battery has been replaced a year or two ago and the best it has ever done was 3 hours doing excel stuff with the Wi-Fi off. Sure you/we all complaining that the iPad is lacking this or lacking that and comparing it to the HP TC1100 tablet...Don't forget, before the TC1100, there was the TC1000 which was pretty horrible and after the TC1100, HP was working on the "Slate". Soon we will see Darth Job/iGod on stage with his black turtle neck and blue jeans telling us what we NEED to buy because Apple has made it better, faster and finally put in a camera on the iPad, people will cry and applaud...but we all know that's what they should have done in the first place.

Anonymous said...

The problem with the HP, as with all the competitors is that they were / are saddled with crap Microsoft operating systems. That's the "fail" quotient.

Anonymous said...

To all the critics of the iPad - what have you put to market lately? If you know so much about products, what the pubic wants / needs, and how to make a better product, then get off your sorry asses and put something to market. Otherwise, shut the f--k up, Monday morning quarterbacks.

Anonymous said...

It surprises me every time I hear how Apple users defend Apple products so hard core. I can never understand getting excited over a product that charges you, and gives you less freedom. When they bring something out, many times they're really good for the time, but for upgrades you can't just upgrade anything, you have to buy a whole new system. I don't get that logic. That's like if your air filter on your car gets old and dirty, you need to buy a whole new car.

The sad thing is, the more Apple products you own, the more you're chained to them, given iTunes and all.

I think Apple fans either aren't computer savvy enough to own a pc or got duped into Apple and can't really break away from them and are too embarrassed to say they got shafted. On top of it all, they'll say that Microsoft is what Apple really is, a business that markets themselves to where you must use them and only them.

Before you berate me, I'm not a Microsoft fan, I actually use Linux and Windows on my PC at home. Wish I could use Linux for everything, but that's not possible right now. Keep your choices open people. Stop paying for iTunes, or relying on Apple Techs to change your batteries, or settling for the storage they give you.

Anonymous said...

well lets see....with 7 years of advanced technology the hp wins. invest half a billion dollars into the hp and see what u could come up with. seems that apple simply modernized n updated the hp. still a niche device, wont be a real computer contender for years.

Anonymous said...

All I want is iPad 2.0.....also known as the iPad with all the stuff Apple probably intentionally left out in 1.0

Anonymous said...

You all utterly missed the point. The point isn't that the iPad is inferior to the TC1100, it's that comparable technology existed 7 years ago on the open market. Obviously the iPad is slightly more sophisticated and has an OS that some might consider better. It's newer and made by Apple, it will have those things. So that's besides the point. For $600 you should get something two or three times as fast and shouldn't be restricted to using the hardware a certain way. In summary, the iPad's very existence and popularity is iRonic.

I could rant on more, but I've made my point and kept it somewhat concise, I hope you all can take something away from this.

KentR said...

The point isn't that the iPad is inferior to the TC1100, it's that comparable technology existed 7 years ago on the open market. Obviously the iPad is slightly more sophisticated and has an OS that some might consider better.

If it's comparable, then why isn't the HP more popular?

"Comparable" means the whole package fills the same requirements. Weight, price, battery power, etc all have to be included in the comparison.

You said yourself the iPad is more sophisticated. Others have mentioned the lower weight, lower cost (don't forget inflation), faster wifi...

Don't fall into the trap of comparing processor speed. There's much more involved in a computer's overall speed. Benchmarks will have to settle the speed debate.

And yes, the HP does some things better than the iPad will.

They're not comparable.

I'm not a fan-boy or defending the iPad - I don't love Apple as a company and am disappointed with some of their products. Just painting realistic perspective.

The tc1100 isn't as popular, because 7 years ago, smart phones really weren't popular. And it was marketed to corporate users, not people with smartphones that wish they had a bigger screen.

Now adays EVERYONE has a smartphone, everyone wants the internet in their pocket.

If they brought another one out with similar specs, but ssd and modern battery tech, it would sell a lot better, and also have a modern price, similar to the ipads.

Anonymous said...

So this iPad thingy then, is it any good? is it selling at all?

I tried to buy one but they told me it was sold out couldn't get hold of the thing. Apparently China has now drained the Yangtze valley dam and built a 10 million acre factory with 5 billion little Chinese slaves working 27 hours a day just to keep up with the demand for this PaddyI thingy.

How's HPs production line doin?? Still operational?

Anonymous said...

Wow, nothing better than an Apple, Windows, Linux HP grudge-fest then.

I've read every comment and even though I own, and use daily an HP TC1100 (I'd be lost without it) I do own two iPhones (3GS and 2G), my daughter (she's five) owns an iPod Touch and my wife has an iMac (27") and an iPhone (3G).

I'm still not buying an iPad though; simply it can't replace my TC1100. And no, sorry, I'm not 'writing' with my finger and I'm not typing on an imaginary keyboard either.

Anonymous said...

Thank you Apple for putting slates back on the radar. HP dropped the ball in a big way with the TC1100 due to bad (read NO) marketing and a high sales price and just as they were starting to develop a consumer base they cancelled the product.

Apple has consistently hit home runs due solely to their marketing. With Apple popularising slate style devices, we are now likely to see an updated TC1100 or similar from other manufacturers.

In fact HP have already announced they will be producing a slate shortly. Thanks to Apple the next 10 years will see some fantistic devices and innovations in slate style computing.

Mike said...

I just got an iPad after getting a $200 gift card. I will post a comparison video on YouTube between the tc1100 and iPad after a little more use. I love the TC1100, but the iPad should be able to replace what I usually use it for. I do agree it's "useless" since I have an iPhone 3GS and have plenty of laptops, desktops and a netbook. but the 10 hour battery was just too good to past up. will post link here in a week or two

In summary,

The Apple iPad has a beautiful interface and does many things very well. It's drawbacks are that it is only capable of performing a fraction of the tasks that people expected it to do.

The HP TC1100 does everything your personal computer can do. It does a lot of things very well; but as with any PC, many tasks will give you headaches while troubleshooting and setting it up.

"But Apple products have tons of Apps!!"....

This statement is the dumbest argument I've ever heard... yet I keep hearing it. Before the "Buy This Over-Rated Product" marketing campaigns took foot, "Apps" were merely called "Computer Programs." You know, that Calculator program that's been on your windows machine since 1992 is an "App." Find me an "App" that's available for Apple products and I'll find you the PC equivalent plus 10 additional variations customized for your individual preference. If the point of the argument is that third party innovation makes the iPad superior, what about the fact that the PC nature of the TC1100 makes it compatible with any hardware addition in the market.

"The TC1100 has no touchscreen multitouch"

Boo hoo, the stylus is almost always preferable to using my dirty fingers when I'm on the go, not to mention better pinpoint tapping and the ability to to sign and write on documents. By the end of the day, I haven't had to wipe dirt and finger grease off of my screen 10 times.

"Comfort and Convenience"

With regards to ease of use and comfort, paper thin is not always comfortable. I'm always scared that I'll break my iPad or crack the screen like the way many friends have broken their noninsurable iPhones. I have no such concerns with the durable HP, considering the fact that I've dropped it half a dozen times.

Actual Buttons... I love the three programmable buttons plus the "jog dial" for easy browsing or reading (hold up to scroll up, hold down to scroll down, press in to click.) The other three buttons can be programmed to do just about anything; launch a specific program, adjust/mute volume, media navigation, browser navigation, stand by, escape/tab, voice command, voice record, change screen orientation, etc, etc, etc.

I get annoyed at my iPad because it often changes from landscape to portrait orientation with very little movement rotation on my part. The HP gives me full control with a simple button that is accessible either onscreen or via the programmable buttons on the side.

"The iPad has 3G Mobile Internet"

Oh yeah? I use Clear as my home internet service provider. For $15/mo, I can add mobile 4G internet access with an unlimited data plan. For $15, ATT offers a 250Mb data plan with 3G internet. That let's you download 1/3 of a movie over the course of an entire month at 1/4 the speed. You can opt for the unlimited data plan for $30 but you'll still connect at 1/4 the speed.

Add Windows 7, USB webcam + Skype, Tversity Media Server, and whatever else.

Ok... I'll concede that the iPad has a longer battery life and that ATT probably has a larger coverage area.

Scoreboard:
HP TC-1100 - 5 million and 1
Apple iPad - 2

I brought the HP TC1100 for my 6yr old off the ebay only after her 10" netbook was stollen. she is the one that told me about the tablet, as im not very computer savy. i never even heard of a tablet before. now that she has it "OMG" that thing is awsome. the thing that is good for her that it has a detatchable keyboard so she still get to learn how to type but it can be removed when not in use... after hearing about the new ipad i thought we would upgrade her to that for xmas, but after reading all the info i think we got a better deal for our money only $200. and in very very good condition..i find myself useing her tablet morre then i use my big a** laptop..my husband jus got the iphone 4 "OMG" it is crap he will returning it again for the 3rd time to get a new one.. i could imagine how bad the ipad must have been when it first came out... haands down the HP TC1100 is better

The price range is actually quite close, if you think about it.
Moore's law states that the number of transistors that cant be placed on an integrated circuit will double about every 2 years. The capabilities of electronic devices are all closely tied to Moore's law. Pricing follows Moore's law very closely as well, only in the opposite direction. While processing power, speed, and memory capacity go up, cost goes down, cutting it's self in half about every 2 years.
so, $2500(2003); $1250(2005); $625(2007); $312.50(2009); $234.37(2010)
even with inflation the tc1100 is still cheaper than the ipad.
This also says apple is shoving their c*ck down our throats by selling us 2003 specs at 2006 prices. -_-

Point is:

Apple Is Starting To Look Like A Dinosaur.

I have a TC1100 but I do not use Windows. I have Debian Linux with LXDE desktop. When you do this, the TC1100 is vastly better than the iPad. The TC1100 also has a proper Wacom pressure sensitive screen so can be used like a Wacom Cintiq and Wacom are worse than Apple in terms of product costs. I do however have a Macbook as well which is cool.

Anonymous said...

Just bought a TC1100 :-))) I have an iphone, which is a good but VERY limited device (won't even let you share 3G internet with a laptop without jailbreaking it or paying extra to AT&T), so certainly don't need more of the same.

Looking to develop apps, so wanted to try out a tablet with similar specs as iPad, but which has USB, etc.. so I went with the TC1100.

The reason why iPad doensnt have USB is because it'd be easy to load other software on it, overwrite Apple OS, load Android onto iPad, etc.. Apple doesn't want that.

For instance, on my TC1100 I will be loading Ubuntu Tablet edition and either dual-boot Android, or just run LiveAndroid from USB. Both are good software, Ubuntu is a full-fledged OS, while I'll screw around with Android to build apps. Android will outpace Apple soon, so it makes only marginal sense to develop apps for Apple at this point.

Anonymous said...

All you people whom say it's OS that counts, damn you're right. Do remember it's not Macintosh on those iPads, its Linux :/.

Linux is also the worlds leading open source operating system, with thousands of distributions internationally. The iPad is absolutely SHIT.

Point is that you're told what to buy, without any consideration that someone else has made something better without making a big fuss.

There's a windows 7 advert been going round recently about watching TV on your PC with the aid of a tv tuner, like I did in 2003 without the aid of microsoft... It's not a new thing!

Has it been mentioned that HP didn't develop the TC series, it was Compaq, before the merger. HP did the TC4200 and that was a flop, not even a proper slate device. I had the original TC1000, still have it. I went to the TC1100, have 3 of them for different uses. One is in a the bullet proof jacket and dedicated to GPS in the 4X4, That is useful screen size. My next advance????? was the TC4200, didn't have that long. Son is Apple person but even he didn't move to the Ipad, and he is back at Uni doing a doctorate.

Used to have the HP, sold it 2 years ago. Had major overheating issues! Bought the iPad to resell and am so attached to it that I can't part with it. Love the size and how easy it is to take places. I have the wifi one. Love the iAnnotate app! I rarely need to print things now because I just load them on the iPad to read and highlight. No paper! Awesome! Of course I still use a laptop. You can't replace a laptop with an iPad, that's just plain silly!

Anonymous said...

Apple products will always be that thing that sounds cool and you always play with one at your friends house because its fun, but if you actually have one it gets boring after a while, If you want an ipad get one if you dont then dont.

Zeblackcat said...

What I hear here is that most people after the iPad are mostly it for the brand... they'll buy a turd if it's sculptured into a nice apple. Because we all know, apple is all about design, bringing it to the man (making it user friendly) but they don't allow you the space to customize it or create your own adaptions.

All in all, I'd say the TC1100

Anonymous said...

This is stupid! A TC1100 is a real computer and an Ipad is not! its a big ipod touch. it uses an arm9 processor/gpu thingy and thats why its good on batteries. of course anything that uses an arm processor sucks because you have to run special software. The android things also suck due to the arm processors. Thats why i dont screw with these toys and just get a real pc instead. Its like comparing a Smart fourtwo (ipad) to a 2jzgte Supra (tc1100) sure a smart car is good on gas but tops out at 50. the Supra is kinda heavy and not so good on gas but is way faster and it actually handles!

Unknown said...

It's funny to hear people defend the Ipad by pointing out other features it has. But none of those features are very compelling, innovative, or expensive. So why does the Ipad do so little for so much money, so many years after the fact.

Chris said...

I think what you've been missing is the core concept of both gadget itself..

TC is a computer, while iPad is more of an on-the-go concept. An on-the-go concept is not meant to be treated like a full featured computer. It's something you grab to read books, papers, mobile working, etc.

TC is MEANT to be a tablet pc, a real computer.

There's a HUGE differences that impact the way you do things with them.

I owned TC 1000 (with transmeta crusoe), and iPad, but now.. I mostly use a Galaxy Tab as a phone replacement/on the go hub.

IMHO all of those gadgets are great but incomparable, although iPad and Tab is very likely to get head to head :)

the point is it cam out in 2003 so apple failed to make something in 7 years that was copmletly beter apple is over rated company that you pay for the brand name

This is stupid. Advanced technology always exists for 5-7 years until it becomes popularized and accessible. Take solid state drives for example. They're way faster and better, but we don't see them coming in cheap stock computers, and we probably won't for years down the road. I don't know much about the HP TC, but i guarantee it was expensive as hell when it came out. The TC's app support was probably minimal to none, and the CPU management of the touch XP OS was probably not nearly as efficient as iOS. I'm no advocate for iOS (i really don't like it), but it's definitely a more polished product right now than its competitors. Also, modern tablets and these old PClike tablets aren't even the same market, and the iPad is either the same price, or cheaper than android competitors. I'm sick of people arguing against iPad and iPhone. I agree that Macs are overpriced bullshit, and i would never choose one over building a PC with ten times the hardware for half the price, but the tablet/smartphone market is completely different and apples products aren't at all expensive compared to the competition. they're actually cheaper in a lot of cases.

I just bought a TC just to piss of some of my apple fanboy friends.
Buy a TC on ebay - 250 dollar.
Coffea with apple fanboy - 2 dollar.

The whole point to this is that apple fucking sucks, this thing is 7 years old and is twice as powerful. Hp leads in innovation, apple has a whole lot of catching up to do. All of apple's products are extremely expensive shiny paper weights, If you have the money to blow on a mac try building your own pc and see how much better it will be in the end compared to a mac. Want an iphone? try checking out something running the android os! once again you will find a better product.

This really angers me how some denounce the HP model without truly appreciating it. To start, it was built 7 years ago, 7 years! That's a hell of a long time, especially in technology. The fact that HP even had the inclination to try and create something as successful as they did is remarkable enough.
The specifications. The HP matches up pretty well. Sure, the iPad may have a headphone socket, may have this, that, whatever. Truth is, for that, you're paying a hell of a lot of money for technology which isn't so far advanced. You're paying for the operating system and the brand, and that's not what this debate is about. The screen is better, I'm sure, the resolution, the touch and the general feel. But for THAT much money, you'd think you'd have a camera, an improved processor, hard-drive, even USB sockets. They're just taking your money. Filtering it out, then next year, BOOM, version 2, with the camera, everything else slightly improved. Hardware still roughly the same as the HP. HP TC1100>iPad v.1

TC 1100 generate a bit of heat. Okay if you need a heavy hand warmer. Not so much fun if you just want to read. With the Splashtop app, I can stream movies, audio, flash, whatever...from my desktop to my iPad. I used to love my TC 1100, but now it just seems so 2003.

Anonymous said...

What everyone seems to have forgotten is that when the TC1100 came out it cost nearly $2500.
In 2003 you could buy a fairly decent PC notebook for less - but the TC1100 was designed for professionals on the go - as in Doctors in hospitals - that needed to share patient files, ie: Medications, diagnoses, xray and CT scans, etc. without having to page thru 2" or more of paper.
The touch screen can only be activated by the stylus to prevent accidentally entering or erasing info if you touch the screen with your hand.
Inconvenient using the stylus - not really, and I've not lost one due to the tether but I'm sure some have.
I liked the fact my Sierra Wireless PCMCIA AirCard worked with my ATT wireless account and I could receive a contract faxed to me, check it over, sign it and return fax it to my customer while I was on the road.

PS -
since I've upgraded to to a 128GB SSD and reduced the idle voltage under 0.700V ( that's not a typo ) the system temps have dropped to under 45C - my sys has 1.2GB CPU and 2GB memory - and the battery life is just over 5.5 hrs with the wireless on and over 7hrs with wireless and bluetooth off.

TC1100 rocks. For a few hundred bucks I upgraded to 2GB RAM, Windows 7, 120GB 7200 RPM hard drive. Full access to documents, MS Office, speech to text, Internet, downloads, camera integrated with skype, flash. Bought a second TC1100 for $200 off eBay. Awesome. iPad=iFail

Windows Tablet with USB and PC Card is unlimited "toy", you can attach any device: gsm or gps adapter, wireless card, bluetooth, infrared, etc. Also you can always attach a keyboard, mouse, printer, usb camera, monitor, usb hub ... etc. iOS and even Android is too restrictive and too stupid for experienced (guru) users.

I have a TC1100. It's better than than the Ipad for one major reason that people are missing. The TC1100 has a proper Wacom screen so you can use it as a digital sketchpad. To this day there is no better fully integrated slate device with this feature. The Ipad is useless for drawing. I do have a Macbook Pro so I like Mac. Also, I use Linux on the TC1100 which runs great.

Why do people talk about things they don't know about? Do some research before running off at the mouth.

-Competitors to the iPad are much cheaper and have more features than the apple product. Do some research.
-Lose the pen...blah, blah, blah. Did you even notice that the pen for the hp is tethered to it? And don't forget the screen is more accurate: you won't accidentally activate a spot by brushing or leaning your hand on it. you can actually draw on the hp.
-Battery life? Would I rather spend less time doing much more or more time doing much less? I can buy a new battery and still won't come close to the money spent on icrap.
-Can you type on that virtual keyboard crap like you can on the detachable and INCLUDED real keyboard of the hp product?
-Why pay hundreds more just for gps and an accelerometer? If I get lost, I can find my way on my phone (which didn't even cost me 100 bucks NO CONTRACT), and I can get a nintendo 3ds to play real, high-quality games and still have hundreds left in my pocket compared to wasting money on apple junk. You're gonna pay 500 bucks or more to play mobile games? Really?
-I'm not a fanboy, I just want the best bang for my buck. There are plenty of tablets that kill the icrap and are much cheaper...even if all you want is a device that is little more than a web-browser. But I felt dumb thinking about getting one when my friend turned me on the the hp tc-1100...a full-fledged pc. (don't even get me started on icrap not having flash) Even if my hp died on me, I could buy two more without even coming close to the price of the entry level icrap tablet.
-Bust out your tc-1100 around an icrap sheep and see how impressed they are...
-Why pay more for less? When I found out what little the ipad can do I realized how smart Jobs is. When you can convince people to pay so much money for something they already have or really don't need...wow. Sheep I say, sheep.

My VGA from 2003 was a hundred times less powerfull than the one I bought last year...
My Sound Card is ten times better now...
My Mp3 player from around 2003 had 5 times less memory and weaker batteries than the one I have now.
Nowadays you can buy the stupidest shit and it would be better than what was on the market 8 years ago...

Can you say the same about Apple? The difference between the iPad and HP doesn't show even a year of technological progress. It's completely obvious that Apple are the same as Microsoft - marketing and reselling the same garbage to get the most out of it.

Anonymous said...

Coolness? Apps? Are you serious? "Calculator" on my desktop is an App...just a nice name for "smaller and less functional program." My 80 dollar Tracfone has "apps." I just got a tc1100 (like new with all recovery media/spare parts/etc.) for less than $135, and you should see the "coolness" factor when I bust this thing out. Those Isheep seem pretty envious to me. And I could add the one or two things it doesn't have and still not even COME CLOSE to wasting as much money as I would have on some Icrap. Could Ijunk ever come close to doing what this baby can do? No way. Forget multi-touch - I can actually DRAW on my screen, and the harder I press, the thicker the lines. You can keep your extra-large, overpriced, Ipod touch...I'll stick with my REAL tablet.

I could have gotten three of these for the price of one ipad. My machine came out years ago, but apple still can't touch it...some innovation. The REAL innovation is getting all these sheep to waste money on something so unneccessary...my old netbook was more attractive than an overpriced ipad. Wait till your sh*t breaks and needs repair...

OK, you miss the point... 2003 HP made something witch is much better than "high tech" Ipad made 2010, seven years later. Point is Apple did not made nothing revolutionary, some alien technology. Apple just put good OS in something already invented and put on HUGE commercial. Still Apple will robe people with "new, new...or Ipad 3,4,5... whatever..." Still no USB, HDMI, Card Reader ports, all you really need

HP TC1100 IT'S JUST FOR EVER !

RLst said...

I've got both of these devices! I can't believe how stupid people are and the comments they leave are simply out of sheer frustration that they can't admit that Apple is actually kicking arse.

The first-gen iPad totally, completely, obliterates and nukes and destroys the TC1100... I mean there is no freaking comparison. You are comparing not apples to oranges, but chocolate (iPad) to sh*t (TC1100).

Piece of sh*t TC1100 has like 1.5 hours battery life... idling! WTF man?! You're not doing jack sh*t, but the fan is running at full blast. Its slow as f*ck compared to the iPad. The iPad only gets a little bit warm playing the most intensive games.

The screen, although was probably state of the art and very good back in the days, is still nothing compared to the first iPad, it has a yellow tinge, slower refresh rate, lower contrast and not bright enough.

The keyboard is flimsy and some of the keys have stopped working properly. Also the track pointer thingy stopped working as well.

I have to constantly keep tightened the screws cause the hinge mechanism keeps getting floppy.

And worse of all, IT RUNS PIECE OF GARABE WINDOWS. I managed to get windows 7 working on it and even then, not all of the extra buttons and stuff work properly either. I've tried running Linux on it, but the problem with that is you can't do nothing on Linux unless you're some kind of super IT geek developer dude.

This is one of the most frustrating:… There is ALMOST NOTHING, NO SOFTWARE that works on TC1100 in a tablet way. Yeah I can run Microsoft office (which is a load of crap anyways), but then I'd have to use a mouse, which defeats the purpose of being able to use the stylus on it. OR you could use a stylus, but then you'd have to constantly flip back from using it in tablet and laptop mode, which quickly wears out the keyboard.

There was one art program I used called ArtRage (which has already came out on the iPad anyways, at a 1/20 of the price I bought it for on the windows platform) which I used for drawing, but it wasn't 100% compatible with the pressure sensitive stylus and it was slow cause the CPU could barely handle it, and the stylus constantly needed recalibration.

Also, due to some magnetic and engineering issues, at certain parts of the screen the stylus would go out of whack and jump randomly, so I'd have to shift the drawing I'm working on around the "erogenous" zones.

The stylus was also very easily damaged. And getting one was like trying to find and locate a rare antique clock or something… it was EXTREMELY DIFFICULT!!! Not mention expensive, almost $100 for the damn stylus that wasn't even that accurate.

IT WAS EXTREMELY HARD TO FIND ACCESSORIES for it… I managed to locate a leather case for it with EXTREME DIFFICULTY, had to import it from America somewhere…

There is absolutely NO SUPPORT FROM HP especially in Australia. They made these TC4200 successors or some crap which were just absolute rubbish… yeah the specs were a bit better barely, but the screen was even worse, less brightness, much much lesser view angle, which is the worse thing you could do with an tablet, it was bigger and heavier, the screen could no longer be removed for portability.

IT WEIGHTS A TONNE compared to the iPad. iPad is 690gm or so, TC1100 is almost 2kg or 4 pounds... over twice as much.

Man, I could just go on and on of how the iPad totally Hiroshima nukes the TC1100 on so many levels (no offence to Japanese people, but that's the best way I could describe it)

Unknown said...

There is a lot of garbich talk here, i have both devices and there doing a good job. The TC 1100 is a real computer, the Ipad a compromis. I use both machines each day and it works perfect for me.
In fact its amazing the creation of a tablet back in 2003 with such features the tc 1100 has.
You cant compare a ipad with a Windows powered pc, 10 years between them!
Its crazy to do that. Childish.
Anyway i think that Compaq did a great job creating that tc 1100, 10 years ago!
Apple is ok but overrated.

Han Solo should know that even in 2010, iOS still could still multitask for music. Just not for running multiple apps.

Agreed! Why are so many of these people defending their crApple by comparing the two as if they were both made the same day? Wake up and realize what your saying. One is quite a bit older older the other. Technology rapidly improves these days, so sure, the crypad may have some better stuff because its newer stuff. Why don't you try and compare the HP to a crypad that was made seven years ago? Wait a minute .. where was the crypad then? Oh yeah, it didn't exist! The big babies at crApple got so butt hurt because they think someone ripped off their rectangle when it seems they're not the first ones to make a rectangle shaped pad. If im not mistaken, cavemen invented the rectangle. Crapple gets so sore they feel the need to sue people instead of having a healthy, friendly competition with other companies. Competition can be a good thing. It makes all parties strive to better their product. Anybody ever heard of this concept called sports? Its this neat thing where teams train to get good then go out and compete against another team. One team wins and one team looses. The loosing team usually goes home and trains harder to get better so they can go out and play again. Wipe your tears apple and put on your big boy pants. Suck it up and play ball. If you really want to find out who ripped off who, open your history books children to the chapter about Bill, Steve and Xerox. Apple sucks! I'll take an ANDROID thank you.

Anonymous said...

Look here DICK HEAD, not everybody steals from Xerox and makes billions so they can afford to do what you suggest. There are a lot of people out there who have great ideas but not the cash to back it up. Tell us all what YOU have put on the market why don’t ya. You sit down and shut the fuck up you keyboard badass!

The fact remains, Apple products are overpriced toys for adults. I don't need the cool factor at work...I need to get the job done, and Apple hasn't been up to the "work" challenge for at least 30 years.

Not being a jerk, just giving my honest opinion.

I am not a huge apple fan, but this is my story.

I bought a brand new TC1100 unopened in the box that had been sitting around for a long long long time. I paid 415 for it. For that price, I was expecting a lot. When compared to the Ipad on the outside, the TC1100 may look nice.

First of all, the pen is terrible. In fact, the pen was having problems when I first bought it, I had it replaced, and the new one had to be replaced a month later. Same with the next one, the next one, and the next one before I sold the piece of crap on ebay again.

Second, you don't get the app store with the tc1100. Sure, you can install any program you want, but a lot of app store apps are not available for PC.

Third, the graphics. UGH! Intel GMA is crap! You can't even play internet games like warlords or something like that, let alone FPS games like Half-Life and Team Fortress. I couldn't even run Team Fortress Classic, a game from 1998 with a shitty engine made for GPU's from the 90's.

RAM. Sure, you have the same amount of RAM (512MB) in both, but windows running itself is already hogging up 200-300 MB of ram, leaving you with 200 MB, ASSUMING you have absoloutley NO programs running in the background like skype, steam, antivirus, etc. Those will use up everything. iOS only uses about 40-60 on its own and background programs stop using the RAM when you hit the home button, leaving you with plenty of RAM.

If you are the type of guy who likes to lie down in bed and use a little tablet for web surfing, the TC1100 is for you (assuming you don't mind having to use a pen to type one letter at a time, and don't mind replacing that pen once a month for 50-90 dollars). Other than that, stick with the Ipad (even if you like to lie in bed and use the internet).

Thanks for reading. Let me know what you think!
