Maybe it's a starling display that has been caught up in a vortex and adjusted little in photoshop

It is not a vortex. This is what Starlings do. No one really knows why they do it, but what do we really know anyways?

Starlings do this arial display because they do not want to be the first to touch down because of predators.

It is an effective tool against predators.
