Pub singer arrested for singing 'Kung Fu Fighting' in the presence of Chinese people

Friday, April 29, 2011

From The Daily Mail:
A pub singer has been arrested on suspicion of racism for singing the classic chart hit Kung Fu Fighting.

The song, performed by Simon Ledger, 34, is said to have offended two Chinese people as they walked past the bar where he was singing.

The entertainer regularly performs the 1974 number one hit, originally by disco star Carl Douglas, at the Driftwood Beach Bar in Sandown, on the Isle of Wight.
But after one of the passers-by reported his routine on Sunday afternoon, Mr Ledger was arrested on suspicion of racially aggravated harassment.

‘We were performing Kung Fu Fighting, as we do during all our sets,’ he said.

‘People of all races were loving it. Chinese people have never been offended by it before.

‘But this lad walking past with his mum started swearing at us and making obscene hand gestures before taking a picture on his mobile phone.

'We hadn’t even seen them when we started the song. He must have phoned the police.’

Police brutality of the day

Wednesday, April 27, 2011

Videographer Mitchell Crooks was recording an incident involving some burglars getting arrested by police across the street from his house in Las Vegas, when:

Officer Derek Colling, seen in the video, has taken him in on charges of battery on a police officer and after Crooks checked out jail, he checked into a hospital.

Mitchell Crooks mug shot
Allen Lichtenstein, an American Civil Liberties Union attorney, reviewed Crooks' video and said Colling was clearly in the wrong. Officers are trained to avoid escalating situations, but Colling initiated the incident and created a physical confrontation without provocation, he said.

"It raises serious questions about whether the officer used good judgment and whether he was properly trained," Lichtenstein said. "Those questions require answers."

Police have no expectation of privacy, and it's perfectly legal to film officers as long as it does not interfere in their investigation, he said. Colling erred in claiming that Crooks was trespassing. By law, only a property owner or resident can make a trespassing complaint, Lichtenstein said.

"Even if the officer didn't think he lived there, that doesn't mean he didn't have permission to be there,'' Lichtenstein said. "In the video I heard, that question was never asked."

Ninja goes on a car vandalism spree in Pittsburgh

Wednesday, April 27, 2011

Witnesses Share Tales Of 'Ninja' Encounter:
Police said a man dressed like a ninja and carrying a sword damaged 11 cars before attempting to stab a man early Sunday morning in South Union Township, Fayette County.

"I peeked out my bedroom window. There was someone out by her car," said Jennifer Barry, whose aunt owns one of the damaged vehicles. "He was holding a long object in his hands, and I was like, 'You know, there is someone out there.' Soon enough, the alarm went off and he took off."

Barry called her friend and neighbor, Santino Guzzo, who said he came to the scene and confronted the man after spotting him hiding in the yard of a home on Elm Street.

"He says, 'I have a sword.' That's when I said, 'I have a gun,' and he tried to stab me through my car window," Guzzo said.

The masked man then shattered the rear window of his car with the sword and ran away, said Guzzo, who only suffered a superficial cut.

Floating ants

Tuesday, April 26, 2011

Amazing nature: a raft made of fire ants just won't let itself get pushed underwater by a pair of tweezers.

Video made by Nathan Mlot, Mechanical Engineering student at the Georgia Institute of Technology, while studying the cooperative behavior of fire ants:
Fire ants like many species of ants make their homes underground. They are composed of a complex network of passageways and chambers. During floods or heavy rainstorms, these passageways will full up with water and force the ants to evacuate their home. Instead of scattering individually, fire ants (Solenopsis invicta) have the unique ability to gather together as a colony and form rafts on the surface of the rising waters using their own bodies. A layer of ants on the bottom of the raft serves as a base for the rest of the colony to "comfortably" mill around on. Due to the tightly knit "weave" of the ants, water cannot penetrate the raft allowing the ants to stay dry. This water-tight nature provides the raft with the buoyancy force necessary to float. The ants can remain in the raft formation for weeks if necessary or until the floodwaters subside and they are able to establish their colony in a new underground home.
