Snapshot of the day: Reporter nearly gets hit by flying baseball while taking selfie

Sun Sports reporter Kelly Nash posted on her Instagram this photo she took of herself atop the Green Monster at Fenway Park during batting practice before an Astros-Red Sox game, this Saturday.
She later commented:
"I was taking a picture of myself in the seats above the Green Monster during Red Sox batting practice.
"Producer Art Dryce had called out 'heads up!' a few times while I was taking pictures around the left field section, but none of those balls actually fell close to me, so I took my chances turning my back on batting practice for a picture.
"My whole family is from Massachusetts, and I knew they would be so excited to see me working at Fenway Park, and when I went to text them the picture I noticed the baseball by my head!

I think not having a selfie is a fair price to pay for not having a baseball embedded in the back of your head. Lady got lucky.
I call shenanigans! Smartphones just don't have the capacity for the kind of shutter speed needed to freeze a flying baseball like that. Looking for attention much?
I'm with the other anonymous poster - the shutter speed on phone cams are crap, that ball should be a blur. I call BS.
She's standing in direct, bright sunlight, and I've gotten photos from my iPhone with shutter speeds of 1/1842 according to the exif files of similar photos. You guys don't know what you're talking about. I think this is definitely real.
The shutter speed varies based on the amount of light available. Since direct sunlight is glaring in the pic, it might have had a quick enough shutter to catch this ball with just the slight blur you see.
Even at ISO2000 and raw sunlight, the speed a typical baseball flies off the bat is *NOT* capturable with that sort of detail.
I do TONS of high-speed photography, from hummingbirds to bullets.
If the ball is coming in at, say, 30 mph = 44 ft/sec, then at 1/1842 sec shutter speed, the ball would travel about 1/4 inch while the shutter is open. Doesn't look like 1/4 inch of blur to me.

the picture is real, but the ball is not "whizzing" past her. Someone is dropping it from the top, notice the motion blur is vertical. No FUCKING way can smartphone capture a moving object of that magnitude.
I think the more oddity to the picture is the fact that it almost looks like she's staring at the ball instead of the camera. As if to say - ok it's in the shot, Click!
I realize most of you have PhDs in physics or are conspiracy theorist, so it's pointless to argue with you, but there is a pretty simple explanation that would account for both the slow speed and the odd trajectory of the ball. Maybe it bounced off of something right before the picture was taken?
The blur is diagonal, as if the ball is coming down, and there is definitely 1/4" of blur (the ball is egg shaped at a 45 degree angle) and the shading is correct.
I think its real.
I'm not a conspiracy theorist, but this is clearly a scheme being perpetrated by Big Pharma.
Best guess, someone either lobbed the ball at her or it was on the bottom half of a parabolic arc ... probably not traveling all that fast ... and its a good thing too that it wasn't a fastball ~ there's a reason baseball players wear those asymmetric helmets.

Looks fake to me. There should be more blur. If it is real based on the perceived trajectory it should have hit her.

Yes they do. The ball has a downward trajectory which means downwards trajectory,considering the angle of overhead bleachers she could easily have been hit no matter the speed. And shutter can easily be set to capture moving objects as still as they can be so it's real (from my experience at taking stills of cars in drift and quarter mile races with both my 8 MP phone cam and my Canon DSLR). And as far as regulation ball goes,it's also original,tennis ball has straighter lines since it needs to traduct air a lot faster. Baseball flies at approx. 80-110 km/h and 130 from the best ever pitchers (Babe's record was about 137 km/h top speed) while tennis ball needs to take high force hits several times at speeds of over 200 km/h so do the math. Basically,the pic is real since the Fen has a slightly bent upper bleacher. That's physics 101 and I didn't even need a pHd for that :)
