Bunny-throwing champion

Wednesday, November 18, 2009

Lies!

A 19-year-old German girl won the world rabbit throwing championship in Waitomo, New Zealand yesterday.

Tourist no bunny as a thrower:
More than 70 people took part in the event, according to organiser Barry Woods, who said it was great to see people of all ages rolling up their sleeves and taking part.

"Basically this was a stand against the PC brigade who think there is something wrong with what goes on in the real world," Mr Woods said.

Competitors selected a dead rabbit from a pile and threw it into a trailer attached to a motorbike which, Mr Woods said, was exactly how it's done on the farm.

Lion opens car door with teeth

Wednesday, November 18, 2009

They're evolving. Lion opens family's car door with his teeth:
As the white Toyota came to a halt in the Lion Safari Park in Johannesburg, it slowly padded over while the family inside watched in excitement, unaware of what was about to happen.

Their glee turned to horror as the 300lb lion firmly took the rear door handle with his teeth and pulled it open in one deft movement.

For several seconds the car remained still while the occupants digested the shock of what had happened before finally hitting the accelerator and driving off.

The Loch Ness monster is in Florida

Wednesday, November 18, 2009

Mysterious sea creature spotted in Madeira Beach canal:
Russ Sittloh says a mysterious serpent-like creature that's at least 20 feet long has been swimming in the canal behind his Madeira Beach home and he wants to find out what it is.

"The head will come up and then it will disappear and then the next thing you know, you'll see a couple rolls behind it," Sittloh said.

Sittloh has named the creature "Normandy Nessie" after the road he lives on. The 78-year-old retired engineer has also set up a camera to capture video of the creature and so far he's recorded "Normandy Nessie" six times.

The history of the Internet in a nutshell

Wednesday, November 18, 2009

Here’s a brief history of the Internet, including important dates, people, projects, sites, and other information that should give you at least a partial picture of what this thing we call the Internet really is, and where it came from.

While the complete history of the Internet could easily fill a few books, this article should familiarize you with key milestones and events related to the growth and evolution of the Internet between 1969 to 2009.

Wearing pants is illegal in Paris if you're a woman

Wednesday, November 18, 2009

Women banned from wearing trousers in Paris:
The rule banning women from dressing like men – namely by wearing trousers - was first introduced in 1800 by Paris' police chief and has survived repeated attempts to repeal it.

The 1800 rule stipulated than any Parisienne wishing to dress like a man "must present herself to Paris' main police station to obtain authorisation".

In 1892 it was slightly relaxed thanks to an amendment which said trousers were permitted "as long as the woman is holding the reins of a horse".

Then in 1909, the decree was further watered down when an extra clause was added to allow women in trousers on condition they were "on a bicycle or holding it by the handlebars".

In 1969, amid a global movement towards gender equality, the Paris council asked the city's police chief to bin the decree. His response was: "It is unwise to change texts which foreseen or unforeseen variations in fashion can return to the fore."
The latest attempt to remove the outmoded rule was in 2003.

So these two goats hop on a bus...

Tuesday, November 17, 2009

Persistent goats are persistent. They wanna take the bus.
Two baby pygmy goats tried to get a free ride after they broke out of their pen and walked on board a bus in Vancouver.

Jorja Blake said her goats, Yoda and Yates, follow her around like puppies and, on Wednesday, they hopped a fence and followed two women to the C-Tran bus stop near St. John's Road and 58th Street. As the women got on board Route 25, so did Yoda and Yates.

Surveillance video from the bus shows the two women trying to stop the goats from getting on.

Monday, November 16, 2009

Woman beats off Great White shark:
An Australian woman has survived an attack by a Great White shark by beating it with a paddle after it knocked her off a surf ski.

Linda Whitehurst, the shark's intended victim, said: "I thought this is it, he is going to grab my leg. I had my blade (paddle) and I just kept punching, punching, punching."

She suffered only small lacerations on her right arm in the fight with the 8ft-long shark.

She then managed to scrambling back onto her surf ski and paddling to shore at Byron Bay's famous surfing beach, "The Pass", on Australia's east coast.

Man provides photo for his own wanted poster

Thursday, November 12, 2009

A British man on the run from police sent a picture of himself to his local paper because he disliked the mugshot they had printed of him as part of a public appeal to track him down.

South Wales Police had issued media with the photo of Matthew Maynard, wanted by officers investigating a house burglary, as part of a crackdown on crime in Swansea.

When it appeared in the South Wales Evening Post, the 23-year-old sent the newspaper a replacement photo of himself standing in front of a police van. They obligingly printed it on the front page.

The police thanked him for helping them in their appeal, saying: "Everyone in Swansea will know what he looks like now."

Cannabis use in Europe

Cannabis use chart

Which Europeans are most likely to have tried cannabis?
OVER a fifth of Europeans have taken cannabis at some point in their lives, according to new report on illegal drug use from the EMCDDA, the EU's drug-monitoring arm. Over 30% of Danes, French and Italians aged between 15 and 64 have puffed on a joint. But perhaps for Danes it is just a phase: the Italians, Spanish, French and Czechs are most likely to have dabbled with cannabis in the recent past. Levels of cannabis use are still high but may be declining, says the report. Recent studies suggest that the drug's popularity is waning among the younger generation.

But that's all part of the attraction. The jeep is a new zoo exhibit which allows visitors to get incredibly close to the lions.

The back part of the vehicle, up to where the windscreen should be, is actually on the outside of the reinforced glass cage. The bonnet is on the inside, and covered with meat to entice the big cats closer.

Baby deer jumps into the lions' exhibit at the zoo

Monday, November 09, 2009

A wild deer wandered over from Rock Creek Park and jumped right into the lion exhibit at the National Zoo on Sunday afternoon. Bad idea.

Two female lions went after the deer, but the deer got away from its predators and made a mad dash for the moat.

Zoo police cleared visitors from the area and the zoo's vet staff went in, sedated the deer and took it to an animal hospital. Its injuries were too serious though and several hours later, after being examined by Zoo experts, the deer was put to sleep.
