In South Africa, pigeons are faster than broadband

SA pigeon 'faster than broadband':
Broadband promised to unite the world with super-fast data delivery - but in South Africa it seems the web is still no faster than a humble pigeon.

A Durban IT company pitted an 11-month-old bird armed with a 4GB memory stick against the ADSL service from the country's biggest web firm, Telkom.

Winston the pigeon took two hours to carry the data 60 miles - in the same time the ADSL had sent 4% of the data.
What terrible conditions to live in...

The data rate of the DSL calculates out to be a decent 4.77 Mbs. You could probably walk a 1 TB hard drive the same distance and the pigeon would appear to be as slow as the DSL line.

Indeed.. If I have to upload 4GB it also takes more then 2 houres :)

Sorry Joe but 4.66Mbs is the transfer rate of the pigeon. The ADSL service was moving bits at a depressing 186Kbs.
