Norwegian Prison

They say life in prison is tough. Well, not in every prison. Take a look at this one in Norway. I guess this is the kind of prison where you don't have to think about how to avoid getting anally raped every night.

There's anal rape but it's in pleasant surroundings.

In american prisons they probably use something worse, like Vista.

You are about to get sodomized. Allow or Deny?

this puts my college's dorms to shame... and i bet there's less anal rape there too.

Yeah, lol. That's better than where I was at university. That's not to say that the prison is too nice, just that universities treat their students like crap.

I saw a documentary once where there was a guy in Sweden who was going to prison. He was driving there together with the film crew and when they arrived they first thought they had taken the wrong way because it didn't look like a prison at all. It looked more like some kind of farm - it didn't even have a fence around it.

but at university, you can get drunk, smoke weed and have sex, as well as leave at any time.

Relax its a minimum security prison, when people get here the have a like 6 months to a year left on their sentence they don't want to fuck up and stay in the system.

The anal rape is probably romantic.

Could someone find a crime that wouldn't hurt anyone so I could live there please?

I don't get it. Looks like a pretty standard prison.

What do you think the inmates require most, that anal rape you speak of or basic education and healthy exercise?

Why is it funny? Why do you want to go to prison to learn a job? They probably have schools there too you know...

As for the childish rug in the last picture, I'd reckon it's from the room in which inmates get to spent some time with family. They have a few hours each bi-weekly or something, in which they have total privacy.

No wonder Norway is full of foreigners doing criminal carriers... Who the fuck is scared of spending years in a place like this, you even get paid to stay there, you know....

Anonymous said...

The room that has toys in it is a "family room" for the inmates.

And yes, this is a low security prison for people that has commited a not so serious crimes like drunk driving and minor economic frauds...

Norway is a small country, we are just over 4 milllons. Around 200 to 300 gets killed in traffic accidents yearly, murder is not common, riots don't happen as prions are much like hotells. But, we do have maximum security prisons in Norway too that can house the bad guys if needed. In Norwegian prisons you get paid, and you can get education for free. But, right now prisons in Norway are full so the criminals don't have to serve time....nice system?

I worked in a prison in Indiana where the accommodations were almost as good as this. It was in Rockville.Since that time it has become a women's prison. The older inmates at that time were being acclimated to live outside an institution. Also some of these were cops, mayors,or snitches who were being protected.I did not envy these men . It is a pain in the ass to be a prisoner, even under good living conditions.

Norway is the richest country in the world. It is the cleanest country in the world, has the most beautiful nature, the most beautiful and intelligent people, the best health care, and very few religious nuts. It is governed by the socialist party, the labour party and the agrarian party. You obese, backwards, bigot American capitalist pigs get what you deserve, just like we Norwegians do.

Anonymous said...

It's just another concept of justice. In Norway prison is not a punishment or a revenge, it's a rehabilitation and reintegration place, when possible. Max Greene is right: the lack of freedom and intimacy is a quite hard punishment itself when it's long-term, you don't have to add more shit to it.

Anonymous said...

"In Norway prison is not a punishment or a revenge, it's a rehabilitation and reintegration place" Exactly. When these people are eventually released back into civilization they wont be raving psychotic monsters bent on revenge, but as productive members of society.
That the plan anyway and it seems to work just fine.

Be said...

This is a prison for people who got caught drunk driving. They usually serve two weeks, and have to make pallets. Not exactly murderers or rapists.

Curtis said...

Nobody in the world has the right to say how Norwegians should be doing things; one look at their society should be enough to know they are well involved in their own well being, and that they do not need any outside assistance.

Anonymous said...

Well, I guess this is the sort of things that separate Nordic countries from the rest of the world. Strong State participation, Nanny Social Security, free and highly qualified public school, free quality health care, inteligent, civilized people, few corruption and homogeneous money distribution, strong labour laws, no corporative extraordinary profits, the lowest unemployment rates, and this "liberal laws" (well, what shall we do? the problems exist, we have to deal with them the best way)... What really surprises me is that we have this example for the rest of the world and we still see strong right winged capitalist parties all across Europe claiming "free market" and "minimal state" ... so it leaves me with one question ... WHERE THE FUCK ARE PEOPLE´S MINDS??? WE HAVE THE PERFECT EXAMPLE AND YOU STILL VOTE FOR THAT CONSERVATIVE BASTARDS???

Prisons in Norway is that that. : - )

Anonymous said...

This is a prison system based around an ideology that says that it's better to give a man a proper second chance at life than to mistreat him for x number of years and then throw him back out to his criminal friends. It works. Others could learn a lot from this.

And anyone is wondering why there is so much crime in Scandinavia?

Because those immigrants are not afraid to go to this 4 stars luxury hotel.

Another Norwegian said...

Cornelia is either lying or misinformed. Either that, or the people she hangs around with are quite, quite stupid. The prisons may not exactly be unbearable, but life on the outside will still be preferred by almost anybody else.

After all, those cells are small, if well-kept, and your freedom is limited. Almost everybody has a nicer place outside than there, with the exception of addicts and illegal immigrants. And even those get free housing - after all, addiction is punishment enough in and of itself, whereas deportation is enough of a punishment for illegals. Although illegals who use that offer will know that it means that they will have to leave soon, willingly or not...

You... call it... a PRISON?!!! Men, how is it possible that every Norwegian doesn't break the law to get to this cozy hotel and break it again as soon as the "punishment" is over? It's a luxury comparing to my own room. And if the political system and economy is so awesome, why there are so many suicides in Scandinavian countries? Left wing's hypocrites... And last thing - I do not deny that Norwegians are nice, intelligent people but... Varg Vikernes would be treated otherwise in - for example - French Guyana (have you watched "Papillon"?).

Hey "Fearless Wretch"

1.) Suicide rates tend to be higher in places with high annual rainfall (ever heard of Seattle?) and in countries that far north or south of the equator.

2.) Just because the prison looks nicer than where you live doesn't mean everyone will share your belief that breaking the law = holiday.

3.) Papillon was a movie based on a fictional "autobiography".

4.) A society is judged by how well it treats its most vulnerable--Ghandi Given that prisoners are stripped of every right save for those given by God, who could argue that they are not vulnerable.

and 5.) Enough with the damn ellipses. There are 13 other standard punctuation marks. Please learn them. You write like an idiot.

Fearless Wretch said...

Hey, Abe Froman!

1) In my country people don't commit suicide just because of the weather. They would rather find other solutions to their problems, because they believe that suicide is a sin. And Norway isn't famous for the piety of it's people.

2)Breaking the law isn't holiday. Stay in this kind of prison is holiday.

3)I've never said that story of "Papillon" is true. I just wanted to compare conditions. Stay in prison should't be a reward.

4) The most vulnerable are unborn children and elderly ones. Not the criminals.

5) If you are a lefty, then I name you servant of pure evil.

I am an American who is not obese, swine, or backwards. I am ashamed of our prison situations although the comment about how we get what we deserve is not true. Most 'successful' business men (the real capitalists) are never punished for their "white collar" crimes, and if they are all these men (usually millionaires) have to do is pay a fine. Sure, Martha Stewart and Richard Scrushy were made examples, the government has to discourage rebellion. Did I mention that white collar crime costs us much more than street crime? Those who are in prison being sodomized and living in cages are mostly minorities who did not have opportunities to achieve success (or even survival) legitimately. It's sad that in one of the world's richest nations, many people are still living in conditions similar to those in a semi-developed country. Many capitalists and their families refuse to see the truth, but any logical, open-minded American who has taken the time to read and learn knows that those in prison do not, in fact get what they deserve.

Does anyone know the recidivism rates for Norwegian prisons? I know the rates here in the U.S. are shameful- 75% end up back in the state level prisons (at least in my state), and the nation wide rate for federal prisons is RELATIVELY low at 45%, but still much too high.

this shit is fucking halerious, i head about norwegian jails through my sisters friend that came from Norway for the week. I really like the concept of rehabilitation instead of punishment, in punishment you just suffer, it's like spanking a kid, it tempts the kid to do it again and see if he can get away with it that time, but rehabilitation teaches something, so it's more like having a conversation in how it's wrong and what you cold do instead. any who I find it so hard that anyone would wanna commit any crim ein norway, with such a great social system, being #1 for quality of life in the whole world, free education and healthcare, You'd just have to be pretty stupid or have a mental condition. Right now im going through college papers and i wish i was in norway. And YES U.S. peoples are the the literal bitches of the U.S Government, even our most liberal democrat is considered right winged on an international level. Everybody hates this country. People here don't even know there own history or speak there own language correctly, by literal definition "ignorance is bliss" applies to all americans; including myself (mind you I'm a first generation here. And I think its dope that Norway had civil unions nationally by 1991 when U.S got it just in MA in 2004.

Americans think there number 1, because where they live in America is all they know.

This seems very progressive to me being an American, this prison seems like a place where a person can actually change their ways. A prisoner here could learn how to live a clean lifestyle and gain knowledge to actually change the way they live. That is what the purpose of prison should be, not so much punishment but reform. American prisons just breed more hate and crime, they are filled with gangs that are more dangerous than the ones on the streets.

Pieter said...

If you treat humans like animals they turn into animals. Crime is punished by separation from society but that does not have to be brutal and cruel. This seems a good prison for low security inmates. They will retain their humanity and can rejoin the community after their time is up. It also helps not to have so many silly laws against silly things such as drugs or prostitution. America is a very punitive state and has more prisoners per capita than any other developed nation. It is also the only one that still executes people. That is barbaric.

Anonymous said...

To anonymous above: Your lack of education is showing. "State" can be used in two senses. In the US, it refers to one of the 50 political entities called "States." (I use the capital to differentiate here.) However, "state," with a lower case "s" DOES indeed mean country, and is used in this way in the rest of the English-speaking world, i.e., Canada, New Zealand, South Africa, etc. And, might I add, it is often used in this sense in the US, too, as in courses in political science. But I'm sure you've never taken one of those. They might tax your brain cells.

No amount of lush surroundings can make up for the choicelessness regarding one's sexual prospects (and one's simple social prospects, as well). I can say from personal experience that the worst part of imprisonment is the company you're forced to keep. This holds true even for those locked up in solitary confinement.

When that being said, as a norwegian - i have to say that locking people up for years and not adapting and preparing them for a decent life outside is pintless and irresponsible.

No matter where you put your investment, you will alway get the result of your effort on the other side - and if we dont invest in rehabilitating prisoners, we will get shit out on the other end, wich will lead to a lot more problems.

Crime cannot be fought with punishment or prisons, it can only be defeated through education, welfare and (especially in the case of immigrants) with open arms and systems to integrate them into our society.

When a man has fallen so far that he breaks the law, both he and the society he lives in is to blame. At that point, the best thing you can do is to take care of him, not degrade and abuse him, and help him get his feet back on the ground IF at all possible.

And for those who say that it's spending money on people who don't deserve it, consider this: What is more expensive: A system where 4 in 5 get back on their feet and start paying taxes, or a system where 4 in 5 fail and go back to crime and violence? The math is simple.

I'm happy we're not the only ones who realize that up here in the cold north :)

During my years of working in a Norwegian low security prison, I have never heard a single prisoner express a desire to come back.

It is rather well documented through international research that prison conditions have a minimal impact on wether or not a crime is comitted. The chance of being caught and brought in by the police however, is a very important factor.

And for the record, all categories of criminals can serve in low security prisons in Norway - it is based on an individual screening process and depends to some extent on the length of the sentence.

Since it is obviously popular to compare with the US, here are some statistics:
- In the US, there are 715 prisoners per 100,000 people. In Norway, there are 61 per 100,000 people.
In the US, two out of three (66,67%) of those released from prison are arrested again. In Norway, only 20% of released prisoners end up in jail again.

In short, making the prison conditions as lousy as possible to add to the punishment has nothing to do with crime prevention. It will always be better to be free in Norway than spending time in jail.

Granted, it might make crime victims feel better, knowing that the offender is "suffering". The Norwegian (and Nordic) philosophy is however focused on preventing more people from being harmed rather than making the revenge sweeter.

Nice interior and acceptable living conditions have ever prevented people from doing nasty things to others. Be it in prison or outside...

The United States of America has more people imprisoned now than any country ever did before in the history of the World. In spite of the vast majority of the prisoners' crimes being nonviolent, there is a prevalence of ignorant perception that "convicts" are are worthless thugs and should be punished and abused. Unfortunately; a lot of prisons draw applicants to employment as guards who share that ignorant attitude. The living conditions in many prisons are comparable to Old World dungeons, on Rykers Island, a newcomer who is innocent of any crime but being held awaiting trial might also be waiting WEEKS just to get a blanket...and weeks again to get a cup for their own personal use to drink water or coffee. Norway has some problems, on a much smaller scale than U.S. ...but as this Blog suggests; handles many things in a much saner; and much more grown-up style than most other countries in the World. Learning from what they are doing well would be a good policy for every nation. They are not Vanilla, either...they are Makrel, Is, Tre, Sjo...og Solshinne.

I've always noticed that people in Norway are extremely proud of their origin. The people that make all of the things you know and love (i.e. your favorite desktop operating system, iOS, Android OS) certainly live well in the United States.

I agree, the government is really corrupt. I still can't believe we live in a society with cannabis prohibition. I like the cities in the United States, but Japan is my favorite country.

Why are you so proud to live in Norway? All of the condominiums and apartments in my area (US) certainly look a lot better than the prison (which is to be expected).

Don't worry about the facilities. When the door goes "click" from the outside and you sit on your sofa with your 17" TV with four channels and nothing to do for the next 16 hours - you know where you are.

Do not expect us to treat our criminals like farm animals, walking around in their own dirt, before we let them out into society again. You may do as you like in th US or wherever you are from, but I may have to meet one of these guys in a dark alley one evening or buy gas from him and I see no reason to turn him into a psychopath before that happens.

We do not only look at the criminal statistics, we look at fall- back statistics as well. Who do you think are the worst criminals? The first timers or the experienced ones? Think about that, and have a look at your own prisons and how they work.

It's not about revenge - it's about letting your children grow up in a safer and more fair society.

The mother gets 1 year of paid maternaty leave. The kid gets free medical for life, free dental until 18 years old, and reduced price until 25 I think. Add free school and universities and so on. It all adds up to a high price.
Even a criminal has some potential. When you have invested a lot in a person, you want them to live in the society, get a job and pay taxes.. all to keep the wheels in the society to turning.
To keep a prisoner in jail cost about 800 dollars a DAY. They better learn some new skills and get a job when they come out.
Sometimes I think they have it too nice in jail.
We even have foreigners that to crime just to get in jail. Because the pay (yes pay) the prisoners get are high compared to where the foreigner is from.
If I was in charge I would rent a prison in Somalia for foreigners. Cheap for us, and we have no need to educate people that will be thrown out when the sentence is done.
Like the tent prisons in Arizona and Texas for example: http://www.blogforarizona.com/blog/2012/06/arpaios-tea-party-patriots-face-off-with-the-unitarians-at-the-tent-city-jail.html

Of course.. some times, it might be better to kill the worst criminals.. and cheaper. And maybe we should have killed the top 1% criminals, or top 10%.. but were should they set the limit?
It the punishment is to severe - they will do ANYTHING to escape or get cought. It they kill someone in the process would be of less consern. Probably.

It is very little violence in Norway, and few thefts and so on. If we just could close the borders from pro thiefs would be nice.
If you treat the criminals too bad, they will be angry and more dangerous.
Or maybe if you get really medieval they will fear prisons more than satan himself? Beat the shit out of them every monday, let them heal until next monday and hurt them some more.
No.. I'm not so sure I like that idea.

Drugs is probably the number one reason for crime in Norway. Never lack of money/hunger/medical bills. The state takes care of everyone. You will get a place to sleep, food to eat and money to pay your expences - unless you use them for drugs. That cost to much.
So the time you will spend in jail for selling drugs is long compared to many countries in the world.
Just as drunk driving will get you a fine of 1/12 of your total income. So if you make 12 million dollars a year - you have to pay a 1 million dollar fine. And you may also get some prison time.
I like that. ALL FINES should be based on what you make in a year. If you're rich like Bill Gates: your fine will be 500 million dollars. That will hurt even the super rich.

First off, just let me get one thing out of the way.
Prison is prison. No freedom, and basic slavery, as everywhere else. But in Norway you actually get a chance to improve yourself, and turn your life around.

That beeing said, ive done in the biggest maximum security prison in Norway. As expected it was hars rutines, shit jobs, but also a few laughs.

And i have to comment on the retard that talked about getting brother is there, and change it up.
The brothers in that prison, is the niceguys..
Theyre there because of hustling big, beeing a drugmule and so forth. While the white norwegians there, are the rapists, pedophiles, and mentally fucking retarded all of them.

And then you have the phsyco-pakistani who killed all of he´s three sisters with an axe, because they where getting too Norweagian (born here by the way)

Anyways, its not a walk in the park you Idiots.
I came out a different man, proud to say.
Im calmer, more reflected and i enjoy the small things in life..

SO LISTEN TO WHAT I HAVE TO SAY.
It might be a better prison to do time in, here in norway, but its still VALUEABLE TIME! you loose percentages of youre life... Nothing is more precious. Remember that.

I was there for a pretty long time, and I can tell you this much. No way in fucking hell Im going back.

By the way. The cost of having me locked up cost around 200 000 dollars a year, in Halden Prison.

But our society collects on it. Criminals with education, make damn good workers, I can tell you that much. The know the value of a dollar, of time and of efficency.
And when they have earned theyr freedom back, that can actually go out and get a job.
Not right back on the street doing the same stupid shit, because you know have several hundred grand in debt, cus of all the time you lost, and bills you couldnt pay.

Proud Norwegian, who can say that the penial system works great.
