Shoppers in a Cork city suburb got a bit of a surprise yesterday when an elephant decided to wander around a retail carpark before charging up to a traffic junction.

Gardaí were called to the Blackpool area after the animal broke free from a nearby circus.

The circus is currently situated at the site of the old Sunbeam factory, which is just three minutes away.

The Indian elephant appeared to be in quite belligerent form, refusing to be led by his keeper.

Despite the efforts of the two circus employees, the elephant made another dash for freedom, running towards the nearby Blackpool Shopping Centre.

The runaway was eventually stopped at the traffic lights and escorted back to the circus.

Choking dog saves himself by calling the police

George, the two-year-old Basset Hound, had knocked the phone to the floor and got entangled in the wire — winding it round his neck.

And he panicked so much he incredibly managed to ring 999 as he pawed at the phone trying to free himself.

The emergency operator alerted police who dashed to the empty home of driving instructor Steve Brown and his daughter Lydia, 18 on Saturday night.

They were preparing to smash down the door when a family friend from a nearby house ran out with a key to let them in.

Four officers sprinted through the house in South Hiendley, West Yorkshire, searching the rooms.

And then neighbour Paul Walker walked into the living room and found terrified George choking — with the phone lead wound tightly round his neck.

Paul, 41, ripped the phone apart to wrench the wire from George's throat.

Airplane pilot has a mis-flight meltdown

A JetBlue pilot went through an apparent mental breakdown during a flight from New York City to Las Vegas yesterday, when he was locked out of the cockpit by the flight staff.

According to one witness, the pilot emerged from the restroom mentioning a bomb and shouting "Iraq, al-Qaida, terrorism, we're all going down." He then reportedly approached the cockpit and began repeatedly banging on the door asking for the code which had apparently been changed to prevent his reentry.

He was allegedly subdued by multiple passengers prior to landing.

Man shoots woman, mistaking her hair with a bird

Derrill Rockwell told police he grabbed his rifle, the .22-caliber he kept handy to kill rodents around the house, about 5 a.m. Oct. 5 and walked outside to confront it.

It was red, sitting at the top of a hill about 90 feet away from Rockwell.

"His intent was to spook it away," Deputy District Attorney Jason Conley told District Judge Richard Gurley on Friday.

Rockwell shot once but said he didn’t see the bird fly away. Soon after, he heard a woman’s voice, moaning in pain. Rockwell discovered a 23-year-old woman, with a large red mohawk, with a gunshot wound to the head.

Hours before an appointment on Monday for the labor office to check on his health, the 56-year-old man held his left leg against an electric saw in his home workshop and severed his foot just above the ankle, Austrian broadcaster ORF reported.

Fed up with the fact that Facebook only allows positive feedback about stuff, director of the emerging-media program at the University of Texas at Dallas, Dean Terry, and his graduate student Bradley Griffith, have created a plugin, called EnemyGraph, which allows the social network's users to name their enemies, which then show up in their profiles.

"We're using 'enemy' in the same loose way that Facebook uses 'friends,'" Mr. Terry explained. "It really just means something you have an issue with."

"It's social-media blasphemy, in that we're suggesting that you share differences you have with people and share things that you don't like instead of what you do like," he told me last week. "I think social media needs some disruption. It needs its shot of Johnny Rotten."

Who was Mr. Terry so eager to diss? "One of the first things I put was the band Journey," he said of his enemy list, "just because they annoy me, and I thought it was funny." He has also enemied Deepak Chopra and the color red.

Man gets arrested apparently for being assaulted by police officer

A video filmed by blogger Jade Cervantes, showing a man getting arrested by Fort Collins PD officer Kyle Bendzsa, after being shoved for no apparent reason by another police officer, is causing quite a stir on the Internet today.

"We don't want to jump to conclusions. But I want to assure the public that we will look carefully at what took place in the video and get a clear picture about what happened," said police spokesman Sgt. Jon Holsten, who also runs Internal Affairs. "The chief has ordered a review of the video and asked us to get to the bottom of it."

Holsten said officers investigating the video are still trying to determine when the video was shot, the identity of the man involved, and what happened before and after the video was shot. He said police have received no formal complaints about the incident.

Michael K. William - Omar from The Wire and Chalky White from Boardwalk Empire is going to portray Wu Tang Clan legend Russel "Ol' Dirty Bastard" Jones.

Titled Dirty White Boy, the film focuses on the offbeat friendship between the Wu-Tang Clan co-founder and Jarred Weisfeld, a 22-year-old VH1 production assistant who through a lot of hustle (and the occasional lie) talked his way into becoming the rapper’s manager when Jones was serving a three-year stint in prison in the early 2000s.

Despite Weisfeld’s inexperience, and having a client whose talent was undermined by addiction and mental illness, the novice manager engineered an unlikely comeback — only to have it cut short by the star’s fatal drug overdose in 2004 at age 35.
