North Carolina pastor says parents should beat the gay out of their children

Sean Harris, senior pastor of Berean Baptist Church in Fayetteville, speaking in support of Amendament 1 - which would define marriage in North Carolina's constitution as between one man and one woman, and would ban any other type of "domestic legal union" such as civil unions and domestic partnerships - during a sermon this Sunday:


Later, after his speach went viral and he received some serious attention from the Internet, Pastor Harris said his words were taken out of context and issued an audio apology, retracting the statements of violence.

As a Baptist Christian, I want to say that this pastor does not speak for me. I listened to the sermon excerpt and read the retraction. It sounds as if he is advocating physical discipline to prevent homosexual behavior but then claims in the retraction that he wasn't. I doubt many people would buy that. I don't. As a man who felt effeminate as a child and who still today does not fit the "man's man" profile, I am disturbed by this pastor's ideals of masculinity and femininity. My hope in posting this comment is to help people realize that not all Christians are like this one.
