1,000,000,000x zoom onto Titan's surface

Monday, January 19, 2015

On January 14th 2005, NASA's Huygens probe made a successful landing on Saturn's largest moon, Titan, after being delivered to the Saturnian system by the Cassini spacecraft. To celebrate 10 years from the event, NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory has created this composite video that zooms in a billion times to the natural satellite's surface.
This new, narrated movie was created with data collected by Cassini's imaging cameras and the Huygens Descent Imager/Spectral Radiometer (DISR). The first minute shows a zoom into images of Titan from Cassini's cameras, while the remainder of the movie depicts the view from Huygens during the last few hours of its historic descent and landing.
