Because each one is a different fantasy. So it is the final fantasy of that fantasy.

This is one I'm still working on. For FFVII there was Final Fantasy VII, Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children (the movie), Final Fantasy VII: Dirge of Cerberus, Final Fantasy VII: Crisis Core (my fav) and Kingdom Hearts I and II. I didn't mention Chrono Cross because I haven't played it; I only know about it from a friend. For the Final Fantasy aspect of it, we're working on a lot of different sides to one fantasy. Not all the Final Fantasies are this...detailed, so I'll have to agree with Anonymous up there: its a different fantasy for each one. Gives you a sense of accomplishment.

They're called Final Fantasy because the guy who started the series expected it to be his last game but it was a surprise hit and turned into a series.

you're right, Square had a long list of failures before spending the last of their money to create the last game they could afford to make, and named it Final Fantasy.

And yeah, since they made money, a lot of money, why change the name to something people wouldn't realize was from the same company with a different name? ((see almost every other game square has made that doesn't contain the words "Final Fantasy")

These are supposed to be conundrums with this meme. Not easily explainable ironies.
